Legal Director, Corporate and Regulatory

Role Summary

Leading the Corporate and Regulatory Legal Functions within Labatt’s Canadian legal team, this senior role serves as a trusted advisor to commercial leadership, ensuring legal integrity while enabling business growth and safeguarding Labatt’s interests.

Job Responsibilities

  • Advising on corporate law matters, including governance, finance, tax, M&A, joint ventures, IP and licensing, distribution agreements, and corporate compliance.
  • Advising on regulatory matters, including food law, competition law, advertising and marketing law, and other regulatory compliance areas.
  • Conducting legal research and policy analysis, monitoring developments, assessing risks, planning and managing regulatory change projects, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, conducting due diligence and document reviews, managing regulator correspondence, responding to inquiries, producing documents, drafting legal letters, and resolving disputes.
  • Leading team and culture building, hiring, training, mentoring junior lawyers and other professionals, and building a strong talent pipeline.
  • Managing litigation and disputes in coordination with external counsel, providing proactive advice to prevent and mitigate risks.
  • Taking a practical, collaborative and risk‑based approach to legal files and negotiations, working closely with internal stakeholders to understand priorities and safeguard Labatt’s reputation.
  • Coordinating cross‑functional consultation, tracking, monitoring, and project management among stakeholders and subject matter experts.
  • Applying intellectual curiosity, flexibility, and passion for agile, creative, solution‑oriented risk‑management advice.

Job Qualifications

  • Education, Qualifications, and Work Experience: Law degree from a recognized law school, member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario, and at least seven years of progressive in‑house or leading‑law‑firm experience advising senior management and shaping legal strategy, ideally with experience in the areas outlined under Job Responsibilities. Current Ontario bar license required.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in analyzing provincial and federal regulatory regimes, strong legal research, drafting, negotiation, and communication skills, and demonstrated project‑management capability. French‑language proficiency would be an asset.
  • Transferable Skills: Project management; oral and written communication; analytical, problem‑solving, decision‑making; organizational and time‑management; computer literacy; ability to work cross‑functionally, client‑focused, and in a team environment; keen attention to detail; willingness to learn and explain emerging legal areas; readiness to take on increasing responsibility, accountability, and leadership; ability to introduce new ideas and working methods.
  • Qualities: Practical, efficient, diligent, open‑minded, creative, curious, able to handle time pressure and competing priorities, excel at planning and managing complex projects, and maintain a respectful, confident, client‑service approach with all organizational levels, including senior management.
