Position Summary

Led by the Vice-President, Legal & General Counsel, IBC’s legal team (5 lawyers, a librarian, and an underwriting advisor) is responsible for providing legal advice to and supporting a diverse group of internal clients within IBC and its regional offices (Western, Ontario and Atlantic) and members.

The Legal Counsel will report to the VP, Legal & General Counsel. This role will be responsible for a broad range of issues, including: reviewing and drafting of basic contracts, legal research, legislative monitoring, and advising on a variety of matters related to insurance contracts and automobile insurance across Canada.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist internal client groups in the review and preparation of contracts relating to their operations and products, including NDAs, Service Agreements, Consulting Agreements, and Licensing Agreements.
• Provide legal support to internal client groups with respect to their business operations, including but not limited to advising on compliance requirements, contract negotiations, and insurance law.
• Attend Committee meetings as needed to monitor the discussion for compliance with federal competition law.
• Support Underwriting Advisor with respect to coordinating the work of member-led groups responsible for IBC’s Advisory Policy Wordings, including providing legal support relating to insurance coverage and contract issues.
• Provide legal research support.
• Monitor legislative and judicial developments across Canada that affect IBC members and draft summary bulletins to inform IBC members of such developments.

Qualifications

• Member in good standing of the Bar of a Canadian province or territory.
• 3 to 5 years of legal practice in an in‑house or law firm environment.
• Knowledge of property and casualty insurance and competition law is required.
• Experience with contract law and insurance law.
• Experience with drafting and negotiating a wide variety of contracts, including licensing and service agreements.
• Exceptional analytical and writing skills and demonstrated ability to distill complex legal concepts into business‑friendly language to advise on legal risks.
• Strong leadership/interpersonal skills.
• Strong strategic thinking, risk assessment and presentation skills.
• Ability to take ownership of tasks and proactively seek solutions, demonstrating an understanding of the broader impact of legal decisions.
• Demonstrated relationship‑building and client‑handling skills; comfortable working independently and as part of a team; adaptable to changing work volumes and timelines.
• Bilingualism (French & English) an asset.

Salary range: $94,280 - $120,000/year
