Legal Counsel – Canada
Monex is a global financial solutions provider that specialises in FX risk management and international payments. The Legal Counsel will provide legal advice and support to Monex Canada Inc. under the supervision of the Global General Counsel and support other global regions and projects of the Legal Department.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide internal legal advice on a wide range of legal and regulatory matters.
- Draft, review, negotiate, and finalize contracts with clients, business partners, vendors and independent contractors.
- Support agreements relating to foreign exchange, derivatives, money transmission, payment services, technology, marketing, procurement and operational functions.
- Assess compliance with applicable laws, regulations and industry standards and provide guidance on regulatory requirements and risk management.
- Support corporate governance and the maintenance of books and records.
- Assist with corporate reorganisations, due diligence exercises, intragroup agreements and group‑level initiatives.
- Advise on data privacy and data protection requirements.
- Support litigation matters, including legal research, document preparation, dispute management and settlement negotiations.
- Review legal invoices, manage outside counsel relationships and assist with legal expense tracking.
- Develop and improve legal document templates, standardise legal processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency within the Legal function.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Law degree (LLB or JD) or equivalent from an accredited university and authorization to practise law in Canada.
- Interest or exposure to financial compliance, financial institutions, in‑house legal practice, corporate governance, regulatory enforcement and familiarity with basic commercial contracts and documents.
- Knowledge of financial transaction law, contract law, employment law, business associations law and privacy and data security legislation.
- Awareness of the regulatory environment of a money‑service business in Canada.
- Strong analytical, research and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively and concisely in spoken and written English.
- Ability to manage priorities and operate effectively in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
- Strong judgement, organisational and decision‑making skills and exceptional attention to detail.
Desirable Additional Skills and Experience
- Experience in private practice, in‑house legal work, a regulatory agency, compliance function or risk management role.
- Experience supporting a financial services company or regulatory organisation.
- Experience in corporate governance.
- Experience with commercial contracts such as confidentiality and non‑disclosure agreements, client terms and conditions, service contracts and addenda.
