Part-time Gallery Assistant

The purpose of the Gallery Assistant at View email address on ca.edajobs.com is to provide support to the Curator and Gallery team, help implement the Gallery vision and goals, and promote community connectedness as identified in the Recreation, Parks & Culture Strategy and Business Plan. Responsibilities include exhibitions and events support, promotions, and client support, and assisting in the day-to-day operations of the gallery.
Assist with exhibitions planning and administrative tasks. Support the Curatorial Assistant with planning, installation, and communication with artists for displays in the Artrium, window showcase and Members Show.
Collaborate with the Curatorial Assistant on artwork drop-offs, and artwork condition reporting and photographing.
Assist with exhibition installations. Identify what supplies are needed for installation and any exhibition resource areas. This includes prepping and painting walls, hanging artwork, lighting the work, typing and installing labels, etc.
Provide support to staff at events, such as artist talks, receptions, and facility rentals. This includes public speaking and facilitation skills. Photograph exhibitions and events for use in promotions and archiving.
Promote View email address on ca.edajobs.com exhibits, programs, and events as well as other local culture opportunities in a regular e-newsletter. Work with the Gallery team to promote programs, services, and events to guests including providing support with registrations for programs, Gallery memberships, events and website updates.
Support the Curator with administrative tasks, including updates to safe job procedures, hazard assessments, or other documentation.
Answer telephone and respond to in-person inquiries, communicating View email address on ca.edajobs.com information and Recreation, Parks, and Culture program information as required. Maintain excellent public relations and ensure positive working relationships with contacts to facilitate ongoing business. Attend staff meetings, training, and development opportunities. General office activities and other duties as assigned.
Completion of a bachelor's degree in visual art, art history or equivalent professional experience.
Strong interest and/or practical experience in visual arts. Previous experience working in a gallery or related environment is considered an asset.
Intermediate First Aid would be considered an asset
Must be able to work cooperatively and assist with finding solutions to install artwork safely in spaces.
Managing interactions with a wide variety of gallery visitors, members, staff and the public through day-to-day operations and client engagement.
Strong interpersonal, customer service, organization and communication skills.
Knowledge of Office 365, PC computers, social media platforms (Instagram), marketing software such as Canva and web-editing experience. Basic digital photography skills.
Experience with basic hand tools, drills, painting tools and artwork installation. Knowledge of registration and booking software would be an asset.
Flexible schedule is required to meet job objectives, working 20 hours per week, as this position requires evening and weekend work along with daytime work during exhibition install weeks. Scheduling is based on Gallery open hours, events, and operational needs. Typical hours are Tuesdays/Thursdays from 12pm - 8pm and Saturdays 12pm - 4pm for six weeks during each exhibit. In between exhibitions the Gallery closes for exhibit installation for about a week, and daytime hours would be required between Monday to Friday.
Submission of a Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's licence and submission of a 5-year Driver's Abstract with less than 7 demerits
