Role Overview
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Superintendent is responsible for the daily operations of specific projects including but not limited to project scheduling, foreman reporting, project safety, and monitoring project budgets. This position will be working on various project locations in Northern Manitoba and Northern Ontario.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and evaluate the Field Coordinators, Foreman, and hourly employees on projects.
- Liaise with subcontractors, owner representatives, suppliers, and surrounding communities daily.
- Attend regular site meetings.
- Assess hiring and onboarding needs while controlling labor costs and labor force.
- Review and approve all foreman daily reports on the project.
- Represent the company during on‑site inspections, final inspections, and warranty period inspections.
- Participate and ensure compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
- Take lead or assist in any job site accident investigation.
- Ensure job equipment is being maintained and properly used.
- Responsible for overall cost control on the job including discretionary spending, inventory control, handling, and storage of major materials.
- Assist in creation of job procedures.
- Work directly with fleet personnel to ensure all required equipment is available for jobs.
- Assist with development plans for department staff and secure resources for their training.
- Participate in building relationships with First Nation communities.
- Responsible for the adherence to the departmental budget.
- Review and approve timecards and expense sheets for processing.
- Responsible for the adherence to a QMS system within the department.
- Follow all requirements of the company Health and Safety Program and support a safe work environment.
Qualifications
- Proven experience (5+ years) as a Superintendent or in a senior site leadership role within the general contracting industry.
- Experience overseeing construction of water/wastewater treatment plants, schools, healthcare facilities, or modular builds is considered an asset.
- Experience and ability to read and effectively interpret construction drawings and documents.
- Experience working in extremely remote locations and large construction projects is an appealing asset.
- Proven experience with MS Project or Primavera P6 scheduling software.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) is considered an asset.
- Gold Seal Certification or Red Seal Carpentry designation is considered an asset.
- Prioritize the health, safety, quality, and environmental standards of employees, company, and project environments and strive to hold a strong safety record.
- Natural ability to manage, mentor, motivate, and develop a team; proven respected as a leader.
- Confident with digital tools such as tablets, mobile apps, and laptops for documentation and communication.
- Able to establish credibility with project leaders and employees, along with senior management, executives, and clients.
- Ability to promote and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures effectively and professionally.
- Strategic and tactful skills to balance operational production efficiency and safety compliance.
- Understand the importance of collaboration with various departments to ensure success for the entire company.
- Continually leads by example and influences project teams to do the same.
- Familiarity with productivity tracking, time entry systems, and safety reporting tools.
- Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback, and to manage and resolve conflicts professionally.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, always changing environment, which requires critical thinking and last‑minute priority adjustments.
- Must be able to present a clear security clearance check and pass an alcohol & drug test prior to commencing employment and if required, throughout employment.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
