The Assistant Maintenance Technician Reports to Maintenance Technician / Senior Tech (Shift Lead) on shift, ultimately rolls up to Team Lead / Supervisor. Facilities Maintained Include (but are not limited to):

• Sports & Cultural Memorial Centre (arena)


• Sports fields & Running Track


• Community Hall


• Splash Pad


• Dajoh Youth & Elders Centre


• Skate Park


• Softball Diamonds (3)


• Playground Equipment


• Parks & Recreation Administration Office


• Concession Booth & Washrooms for diamond customers


• Exterior Grounds

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Requirements:

• Grade 10 (minimum age 16 preferred due to equipment, safety, and shift requirements).


• Minimum of 6 months of experience in caretaking, custodial, or maintenance services.


• Ability and willingness to be cross-trained in custodial, arena support, seasonal grounds, and event setup duties.
  • Must be willing to obtain required training and certifications (ORFA courses) as eligible:
    – Basic Arena Refrigeration (ORFA)
    – Safe Ice Resurfacer Operator (ORFA)
    – Recreation Facility Cleaning, Disinfection, and Sanitizing Principles (ORFA)


• Ability to work with minimal supervision and organize work priorities to meet deadlines.


• Physically able to perform manual tasks (lifting up to 40 lbs., bending, climbing, working indoors/outdoors).


• Willingness to work irregular hours, particularly evenings and weekends.


• Must be willing to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check.

• Mechanically inclined; experience in lawn care, minor repairs, and general cleaning.

• Experience working with First Nations communities, organizations, or community members on programs, services, or facility operations (asset).


• Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety practices and approaches to community engagement (asset).


• Experience working in recreational, community, or sports facilities.

Assistant Maintenance Technician

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

To provide part-time custodial, caretaking, and light maintenance services at Parks & Recreation facilities, supporting the full-time maintenance team in ensuring facilities are safe, clean, and welcoming for community use.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical Functions

  • Assist in routine custodial duties (cleaning washrooms, sweeping, mopping, garbage removal, etc.).
  
  
  • Perform light maintenance tasks such as changing bulbs, minor repairs, and basic equipment upkeep under supervision.
  
  
  • Support ice maintenance activities in the arena (snow removal, edging, light checks) as directed.
  
  
  • Help maintain exterior grounds including litter pickup, clearing pathways, and seasonal groundskeeping.
  
  
  • Performs weather-related maintenance such as snow removal, sanding/salting, heat event cooling measures, or rain-related cleanup to maintain safe access to facilities.
  
  
  • Follow established safety, risk management, and preventative maintenance procedures.
  
  

Communications Functions

  • Be able to access and understand the Parks & Recreation digital booking system to review facility rentals and programs in order to properly prepare spaces for public use, events, tournaments, and community activities, including setup requirements.
  
  
  • Provide courteous assistance to facility users and staff.
  
  
  • Report facility issues, hazards, or safety concerns promptly to the shift lead or delegate.
  
  
  • Notifies senior staff immediately of injuries, incidents, or near misses.
  
  
  • Contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment.
  
  

Other Functions

  • Provide support during special events (set-up, tear-down, cleaning, crowd flow assistance).
  
  
  • Assist in and cross-train across a range of maintenance and custodial tasks to ensure operational coverage and continuity during peak periods, absences, or special events.
  
  
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Shift Lead or designate.
  
  

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Irregular hours, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on facility usage and events.


• Exposure to noise, temperature variations, and cleaning chemicals.


• Physical demands include lifting up to 40 lbs, cleaning, moving equipment, and working indoors/outdoors in various conditions.


• Part-time schedule: up to 24 hours per week.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

• With the Senior Maintenance Technician (Shift Lead ): Receives daily task assignments, supervision, and feedback. Reports progress, issues, and safety concerns promptly.


• With the Team Lead: Indirect reporting relationship; may receive guidance for specific assignments. Escalates recurring facility or safety concerns when directed.


• With the Supervisor (Facilities Maintenance): Minimal direct interaction, except during department-wide meetings, training, or projects.


• With Full-Time Maintenance Technicians: Works alongside full-time staff, following their direction and learning safe practices. Supports with routine custodial, grounds, and event setup duties.


• With Grounds Keeper: Assists on outdoor tasks such as waste collection, basic turf care, or setup for outdoor programs/events.


• With Other Parks & Recreation Staff: Provides general facility support as requested. Maintains courteous, cooperative working relationships with program staff.


• With the Public: Maintains a professional, helpful attitude when interacting with facility users. Directs complaints or complex inquiries to senior staff.

IMPACT of ERROR:

Errors in judgement of maintenance tasks for the recreation facilities and machinery may subject co-workers and the public to unsafe working conditions, which may lead to injury.

Errors in judgement to control the facility operations could result in facility rental cancellations; financial losses, legal problems, lower safety standards and very unfavourable public relations.

Errors in judgement about facility, equipment and machinery costs may lead to misinforming the Maintenance Team Leader and consequently, may result in financial problems (i.e. budget deficit) for the facilities' operation and maintenance component within the Parks & Recreation

CONTROL:

Guiding principles and policies as set by Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council. Works within the administrative policies and procedures established by the Six Nations Elected Council and other legislation provided by various government agencies.
