The Maintenance Technician reports to and works under the direction of the Senior Maintenance Technician (Shift Lead) during assigned shifts, and ultimately to the Facilities Maintenance Team Lead and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.
To carry out hands-on custodial, caretaking, and maintenance services at all Parks & Recreation facilities, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment for all facility users, staff, and community members.

- Dajoh Youth & Elders Centre

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent, OR Post-secondary certificate or coursework in building maintenance, custodial services, or a skilled trade considered an asset.
- Physical ability to perform maintenance duties (lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing, operating equipment, working in varied weather).
- Must possess or be willing to obtain within 6–12 months:
– Basic Arena Refrigeration (ORFA)
– Safe Ice Resurfacer Operator (ORFA)
– Recreation Facility Cleaning, Disinfection, and Sanitizing Principles (ORFA) - Must be willing to become a member of Ontario Recreation Facilities Association ( ORFA).
- Ability to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Must demonstrate basic knowledge of building systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, custodial equipment, etc.).
- Willingness to undergo vulnerable sector check.
Other Related Skills:
- Experience in arena operations, ice resurfacing, or artificial ice maintenance.
- Experience with refrigeration systems, building mechanical systems, and facility equipment (HVAC, boilers, plumbing, electrical).
- The following certifications are considered assets:
– Legal Awareness I – Supervising in a Recreation Environment (ORFA)
– Legal Awareness II – Managing in a Recreation Environment (ORFA)
– Ice Making & Painting Technologies (ORFA)
– Ice Maintenance & Equipment Operations (ORFA)
– First Aid & CPR - Certified Ice Technician (CIT) designation is considered an asset.
- Willingness to learn and participate in ongoing training and certifications as required.
- Strong attention to detail in cleaning, repairs, and facility upkeep.
- Ability to follow direction and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience working with First Nations communities, organizations, or community members on programs, services, or facility operations (asset).
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety practices and approaches to community engagement (asset).
- Teamwork and cooperation with colleagues across Parks & Recreation and SNGR.
- Good communication skills to interact with the public and staff in a respectful, professional manner.

Maintenance Technician
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
To carry out hands-on custodial, caretaking, and maintenance services at all Parks & Recreation facilities, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment for all facility users, staff, and community members.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Functions
- Performs cleaning, custodial, general repair, and routine maintenance tasks across facilities (including floor care, washrooms, garbage removal, snow/ice control, and minor repairs).
- Performs basic preventative maintenance on tools and equipment and reports when repairs or replacement are required.
- Assists with seasonal facility transitions (e.g., arena ice in/out, field prep).
- Supports tournaments, rentals, and community events through setup, cleanup, and increased facility servicing.
- Conducts daily safety and condition inspections across facilities (e.g., ice surfaces, playgrounds, mechanical rooms, washrooms, diamonds, splash pad), and reports hazards, deficiencies, or unsafe conditions promptly to the Shift Lead.
- Performs weather-related maintenance such as snow removal, sanding/salting, heat event cooling measures, or rain-related cleanup to maintain safe access to facilities.
- Performs grounds work including field prep, diamond grooming, turf maintenance support, waste removal, and walkways/paths upkeep.
- Responds to emergencies and incidents according to procedures, including first aid, facility evacuation, and notification of emergency services.
- Responsible for arena operations including ice resurfacing, edging, flooding, refrigeration checks.
- Opens/closes facilities as scheduled.
Administrative Functions
- Be able to access and understand the Parks & Recreation digital booking system to review facility rentals and programs in order to properly prepare spaces for public use, events, tournaments, and community activities, including setup requirements.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation, including work orders, equipment logs, inventory, and facility conditions.
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies, workplace safety, and environmental standards.
- Attends regular team meetings and report maintenance activities, progress, and resource needs to the either Senior Maintenance Technician (Shift Lead), Maintenance Team Lead, and/or Maintence Supervisor.
Communications Functions
- Responds to public inquiries courteously and provides assistance when needed.
- Ensures facility rules are upheld and reports incidents to the Shift Lead.
- Provides input on equipment and facility conditions to support repair planning.
Other Functions
- Assists concession operations if required.
- Attends training, workshops, and meetings.
- Performs other related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works scheduled shifts including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Rotational schedule subject to facility demands.
- May be required to work unscheduled or extended hours during events.
- Performs strenuous physical work, indoors and outdoors, year-round.
- Frequent public contact.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
- With the Senior Maintenance Technician (Shift Lead): Receives daily direction, task assignments, and supervision during shifts. Reports progress, issues, and safety concerns. Seeks clarification on procedures and standards.
- With the Team Leader : Provides updates or input when requested, especially on recurring facility issues or safety concerns. Supports broader operational goals and priorities.
- With the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor: Limited direct interaction, but may provide input during special projects, inspections, or department-wide initiatives.
- With Assistant Maintenance Technicians: Works collaboratively, offering guidance and sharing knowledge when needed. Supports shift leads in training and oversight of part-time staff.
- With Grounds Keeper: Coordinates on grounds-related work (waste removal, event prep, outdoor repairs). Provides assistance during peak maintenance demands.
- With Other Parks & Recreation Staff : Cooperates with programming and event staff to ensure facilities are clean, safe, and prepared. Responds promptly to maintenance requests from staff.
- With the Public: Provides courteous assistance when approached for facility-related needs.

IMPACT of ERROR:
Errors in judgement of maintenance tasks for the recreation facilities and machinery may subject co-workers and the public to unsafe working conditions, which may lead to injury.
Errors in judgement to control the facility operations could result in facility rental cancellations; financial losses, legal problems, lower safety standards and very unfavourable public relations.
Errors in judgement about facility, equipment and machinery costs may lead to misinforming the Maintenance Team Leader and consequently, may result in financial problems (i.e. budget deficit) for the facilities' operation and maintenance component within the Parks & Recreation
