The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Manager of Parks and Recreation. The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the overall management and coordination of maintenance operations within the Parks & Recreation Department. This includes providing leadership, scheduling, and directions to staff, while overseeing the daily upkeep of all facilities. This role ensures facilities are clean, safe, and fully functional for community use by managing resources, assigning staff, and developing and implementing maintenance plans while ensuring safety standards are followed. The supervisor oversees preventative and corrective maintenance, regulatory compliance, and efficient use of resources to support smooth operations across all parks and recreational facilities.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- College diploma in Facility/Building Maintenance, Recreation Operations, or related technical field, OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field, OR equivalent combination of post-secondary education, trades certifications, and 3–5 years of progressive supervisory experience.
- Must be willing to become a member of Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA).
- Must possess or be willing to obtain within 6–12 months:
– Basic Arena Refrigeration (ORFA)
– Safe Ice Resurface Operator (ORFA)
– Recreation Facility Cleaning, Disinfection, and Sanitizing Principles (ORFA)
- Strong knowledge of maintenance procedures, safety regulations, budgeting, and team leadership/performance management.
- Physical ability to perform hands-on tasks (lifting, climbing, equipment operation, working in cold or outdoor environments).
- Proficiency using computers, maintenance software, scheduling tools, digital booking systems, digital signage, and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Flexible availability for evenings, weekends, holidays and after-hours callouts.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.

Parks and Recreation Facilities Maintenance Supervisor
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Manager of Parks and Recreation.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the overall management and coordination of maintenance operations within the Parks & Recreation Department. This includes providing leadership, scheduling, and directions to staff, while overseeing the daily upkeep of all facilities. This role ensures facilities are clean, safe, and fully functional for community use by managing resources, assigning staff, and developing and implementing maintenance plans while ensuring safety standards are followed. The supervisor oversees preventative and corrective maintenance, regulatory compliance, and efficient use of resources to support smooth operations across all parks and recreational facilities.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Technical Functions
- Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of all park and recreational facilities:
- Sports & Cultural Memorial Centre (arena)
- Sports fields & Running Track
- Community Hall
- Splash Pad
- Dajoh Youth & Elders Centre
- Skate Park
- Softball Diamonds (3)
- Playground Equipment
- Parks & Recreation Administration office
- Concession Booth & Washrooms for diamond customers
- Exterior Grounds
- Develop and implement comprehensive maintenance plans that include routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and timely repairs of facilities, equipment and amenities.
- Inform strategic/master planning to align Parks & Rec goals including the development of workplans.
- Coordinate and support arena operations, including ice resurfacing, edging, flooding, ice maintenance, and seasonal ice installation and removal.
- Monitor and support refrigeration plant operations, mechanical equipment, and building systems, including HVAC, refrigeration, boilers, electrical, plumbing, and pneumatic systems to ensure safe and effective performance.
- Maintain required operational logs and records, such as refrigeration readings, temperature logs, ice quality checks, maintenance documentation, seasonal transition records, and incident reports.
- Coordinate special projects, such as renovations and new installations, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
- Conduct routine facility inspections, identify hazards or deficiencies, and initiate corrective maintenance or contractor support as required.
- Coordinate and support seasonal facility transitions (e.g., arena ice-to-floor changeover).
- Respond to urgent facility or equipment issues and support after-hours operational needs, including emergency repairs, weather-related responses, and operational disruptions.
- Ensure safety inspections and compliance with health, safety, and regulatory standards.
- Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of all park and recreational facilities:
- Administrative Functions
- Be familiar with and comprehend how to access Parks & Recreation digital booking software to ensure facilities are prepared and supported for rentals, public programs, tournaments, special events, and community activities by coordinating maintenance, staffing, and technical requirements.
- Develop, implement, and oversee maintenance schedules, work plans, and staff assignments to ensure full shift coverage and efficient operations.
- In collaboration with the Team Lead, manage staff schedules, conduct regular check-ins, and provide training, feedback, and performance evaluations.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation, including work orders, equipment logs, inventory (equipment/supplies/appliances/machinery/assets), and facility conditions.
- Oversee and ensure the accuracy and timely updating of digital facility signage (e.g., Bright Signs software) for arenas, program spaces, and community facilities; ensure information aligns with the digital booking system, operational schedules, and public communications standards.
- Track and manage budgets, supplies, and resources; assist in budget preparation and monitor expenditures.
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies, workplace safety, and environmental standards.
- Facilitate regular team meetings and report maintenance activities, progress, and resource needs to the Manager of Parks and Recreation.
- Prepares tenders, requests for proposals for purchase of equipment, materials, services.
- Leads/manages large capital projects following internal procurement policies.
Communications Functions
- Compose and distribute briefing notes, memos, correspondence, and updates to staff and management.
- Provide regular updates to management on maintenance activities, progress, and any issues encountered.
- Coordinate with other departments, contractors, and vendors to facilitate maintenance and repair work.
- Conduct training sessions for staff on safety practices, equipment operation, and maintenance procedures.
- Ensure public-facing communications (digital signage, facility notices, schedules) are accurate, timely, and consistent with departmental standards; coordinate messaging with programming, events, and bookings.
- Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public regarding park maintenance issues in a professional and timely manner.
- Participate in regular team meetings and check ins with the Manager of Parks and Recreation to provide updates, recommendations and receive feedback.
- Support positive interactions with community members and facility users.
- Support/make weather-related operational decisions (snow removal, closures, heat events) and ensure safe facility conditions in coordination with the Supervisor
Other Functions
- Perform other duties as assigned or deemed necessary by the Manager of Parks and Recreation.
- Participate in community events and initiatives to promote the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and new technologies related to park maintenance and recreation facilities.
- Participate in emergency response and after-hours callouts as required.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, promoting teamwork and effective communication.
- Train and mentor maintenance staff, promoting skill development.
- Lead by example in upholding high standards of cleanliness, safety, and service.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This position may require occasional evening or weekend work to oversee maintenance activities or respond to emergencies.
- Work is performed in both indoor facilities and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
- Requires flexibility to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required to ensure facility coverage and operational needs.
- Staff are often required to support and be present during community events, tournaments, and special programs , which may extend hours beyond regular shifts.
- Work involves standing, walking, lifting, bending, climbing, and operating tools or machinery as part of daily tasks.
- Must be available to respond to emergencies or urgent maintenance issues outside of regular hours when required.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory for certain tasks to ensure safety.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
- With the Team Lead : Provides direct supervision, guidance, and strategic direction. Reviews schedules, staffing, and resource allocation. Holds the Team Lead accountable for day-to-day operations, safety compliance, and reporting.
- With Senior Maintenance Technicians (Shift Leads): Provides oversight and ensures consistency across shifts. Works through the Team Lead but may give direct instructions for urgent or high-priority matters. Reviews feedback and performance evaluations prepared by the Team Lead.
- With Maintenance Technicians, Assistant Maintenance Technicians, and Grounds Keeper: Maintains a supportive relationship, ensuring staff have the resources and training needed. Communicates department-wide initiatives, standards, and safety policies. Acts as a secondary point of contact after the Team Lead for concerns or escalations.
- With Parks & Recreation Department Leadership (e.g., Manager, Senior Manager): Reports on staffing, facility conditions, equipment needs, and budget requirements. Participates in planning, policy development, and capital improvement discussions. Ensures departmental goals and council directives are implemented effectively.
- With Other Parks & Recreation Staff: Collaborates with programming, events, and facility booking staff to align maintenance with scheduled activities. Coordinates support for special events, seasonal programs, and emergencies.
- With the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council (SNGREC) Staff and Other SNGREC Departments: Works with HR on recruitment, training, and performance matters. Maintains communication with Public Works, Fire, or other departments for shared initiatives or emergencies.
- With the Public : Acts as the senior maintenance representative for Parks & Recreation. Responds to escalated concerns and inquiries with professionalism and courtesy. Promotes safe and proper use of facilities and grounds.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

– Legal Awareness I – Supervising in a Recreation Environment (ORFA)
– Legal Awareness II – Managing in a Recreation Environment (ORFA)
– Ice Making & Painting Technologies (ORFA)
– Ice Maintenance & Equipment Operations (ORFA)
– First Aid & CPR - Certified Ice Technician (CIT) designation is considered an asset; candidates without CIT may be supported to obtain the designation within 2–3 years of hire.
