The Senior Maintenance Technician (Shift Lead) reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Team Lead. Provides leadership and oversight to Maintenance Technicians and PT Assistant Technicians during assigned shifts. To perform technical maintenance and custodial duties while also serving as the shift lead, ensuring that staff assignments are carried out safely and effectively. Provides input into the coordination and implementation of caretaking and maintenance services at all recreation facilities, including but not limited to:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Secondary school diploma, OR post-secondary diploma/certificate in Facility/Building Maintenance, Parks & Recreation Operations, OR a related technical field. OR equivalent combination of education and progressive 1 – 3 years of maintenance experience.
- Must possess or be willing to obtain within 6–12 months:
– Basic Arena Refrigeration (ORFA)
– Safe Ice Resurface Operator (ORFA)
– Recreation Facility Cleaning, Disinfection, and Sanitizing Principles (ORFA)
- Must be willing to become a member of Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA).
- Ability to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call.
- Physical ability to perform maintenance duties (lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing, operating machinery, working indoors and outdoors in varying conditions).
- Must demonstrate basic knowledge of building systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, custodial equipment, etc.).
- Proficiency using computers, maintenance software, scheduling tools, digital booking systems, digital signage/communication tools and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
- Willingness to undergo vulnerable sector check.
Other Related Skills:
- Experience in arena operations, ice resurfacing, or artificial ice maintenance.
- Experience with refrigeration systems, building mechanical systems, and facility equipment (HVAC, boilers, plumbing, electrical).
- The following certifications are considered assets:
– Legal Awareness I – Supervising in a Recreation Environment (ORFA)
– Legal Awareness II – Managing in a Recreation Environment (ORFA)
– Ice Making & Painting Technologies (ORFA)
– Ice Maintenance & Equipment Operations (ORFA)
– First Aid & CPR
- Certified Ice Technician (CIT) designation is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of turf management, horticulture, irrigation systems, and groundskeeping equipment (asset).

- Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety practices and approaches to community engagement (asset).

- Experience preparing shift logs, reports, and basic cost estimates.

Senior Maintenance Technician (Shift Lead)
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Team Lead. Provides leadership and oversight to Maintenance Technicians and PT Assistant Technicians during assigned shifts.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
To perform technical maintenance and custodial duties while also serving as the shift lead, ensuring that staff assignments are carried out safely and effectively. Provides input into the coordination and implementation of caretaking and maintenance services at all recreation facilities, including but not limited to:
- Sports & Cultural Memorial Centre (arena)
- Sports fields & Running Track
- Community Hall
- Splash Pad
- Dajoh Youth & Elders Centre
- Skate Park
- Softball Diamonds (3)
- Playground Equipment
- Parks & Recreation Administration Office
- Concession Booth & Washrooms for diamond customers
- Exterior Grounds
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Functions
- Performs all hands-on maintenance and custodial duties (floors, washrooms, ice surfaces, grounds, minor plumbing/electrical repairs, inspections, seasonal transitions).
- Conducts preventative maintenance checks and maintains equipment/machinery logs.
- Supports the implementation of preventative maintenance schedules and alerts the Team Lead of overdue tasks or emerging issues.
- Provides input into the Maintenance Management System (H&S, preventative maintenance, custodial procedures, inventory control, checklists).
- Ensure maintenance work is completed to departmental standards and report deficiencies to the team lead.
- Ensures safe and clean environments for all facility users and staff.
- Responsible for arena operations including ice resurfacing, edging, flooding, refrigeration checks, seasonal transitions (arena ice-to-floor), and preventative maintenance.
- Coordinates seasonal operational activities (snow/ice removal, field prep, splash pad operations) and communicates impacts to schedules and users.
- Supports facility turnover and setups for bookings, tournaments, community events, and special programs.
- Opens and closes facilities as required.
Administrative Functions
- Acts as lead hand on shift; assigns and monitors daily tasks for Maintenance Technicians and PT Assistants.
- Provides training, coaching, and guidance to junior staff.
- Completes shift reports, logs, and communicates hand-offs to the next shift.
- Maintains control and discipline within the workforce during assigned shifts.
- Addresses’ performance concerns in conjunction with the Team Lead and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.
- Supports recruitment, onboarding, and mentoring of new staff.
- Be familiar with and comprehend how to access Parks & Recreation digital booking software to ensure facilities are prepared and supported for rentals, public programs, tournaments, special events, and community activities by coordinating maintenance, staffing, and technical requirements including facility setup requirements.
- Monitors inventory levels and notifies Team Lead of supply needs to ensure continuous operations.
- Update and maintain digital facility signage (e.g., ice times, closures, program schedules, tournament information) using the digital software to ensure accurate and timely communication to the public and staff.
- Assists with contractor access and on-site coordination to ensure work is completed safely and with minimal disruption.
Communications Functions
- Responds to public inquiries, provides assistance as needed, and ensures facility users follow established rules and guidelines.
- Notifies police/emergency services when required.
- Acts as first point of response for on-shift emergencies until the Team Lead or Supervisor is available.
- Document and report incidents, accidents, and near misses to the Team Lead.
- Conducts and documents routine safety inspections and reports hazards, risks, or deficiencies to the Team Lead.
- Makes recommendations for equipment purchases, repairs, and renovations.
- Acts as primary contact and leader during shift when Team Lead and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor are not present.
- Support/make weather-related operational decisions (snow removal, closures, heat events) and ensure safe facility conditions in coordination with the Team Lead.
- Ensure smooth communication between shifts to support continuity of operations.
- Participate in regular team meetings and check ins.
Other Functions
- Assist concession workers as needed.
- Attends training, workshops, and meetings.
- Performs other related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works days, evenings, weekends (holidays and on-call as needed).
- May be required to work unscheduled or extended hours during events.
- Physical work includes lifting, climbing, operating machinery.
- Subject to public interaction and scrutiny.
- Indoor/outdoor duties vary by season.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
- With the Team Lead: Receives daily supervision, work assignments, and priorities. Reports on shift progress, staff performance, and facility issues. Seeks clarification on schedules, maintenance standards, and safety procedures.
- With the Supervisor (Facilities Maintenance): Provides updates and input as needed, particularly for escalated issues or special projects. Ensures alignment with department-wide goals, safety policies, and procedures set by leadership.
- With Maintenance Technicians and Assistant Maintenance Technicians: Provides direct supervision during assigned shifts. Assigns tasks, monitors progress, and ensures safety compliance. Offers guidance, on-the-job training, and support. Reports staff performance and concerns to the Team Lead.
- With Grounds Keeper: Coordinates field and turf care work when required. Provides shift-level direction to ensure grounds maintenance integrates with overall facility operations.
- With Other Parks & Recreation Staff: Cooperates with program and events staff to ensure facilities are safe, prepared, and operational. Provides timely communication on maintenance needs impacting scheduled events.
- With the Public: Acts as the on-shift maintenance lead for public inquiries, safety concerns, and facility use issues. Promotes positive customer service while enforcing facility rules. Escalates serious issues to the Team Lead when necessary.

IMPACT of ERROR:
Errors in judgement of maintenance tasks for the recreation facilities and machinery may subject co-workers and the public to unsafe working conditions, which may lead to injury.
Errors in judgement to control the facility operations could result in facility rental cancellations; financial losses, legal problems, lower safety standards and very unfavourable public relations.
Errors in judgement about facility, equipment and machinery costs may lead to misinforming the Maintenance Team Leader and consequently, may result in financial problems (i.e. budget deficit) for the facilities' operation and maintenance component within the Parks & Recreation
