Course description:

Variant interpretation is at the core of clinical genome analysis. Assessing whether a variant is involved in a disease phenotype informs clinical decision-making. Genome analysts require a deep understanding of genetics and of genomic methods, of the available databases and literature resources. It takes practice to consolidate this information efficiently and effectively, and this experience comes from working through many cases, and from learning with experts in the field. This module offers opportunities to engage with industry experts on technical aspects of variant interpretation and learning from genome analysts who are experts in a range of disease areas.

The course includes guest lectures from industry, clinical and research labs who demonstrate their products and their work-flow. Students gain insights into the thought-process of genome analysts, expand their knowledge of field-specific literature on variant interpretation, perform variant analysis at an advanced level, and learn about new and emerging methods that can provide critical information for variant interpretation.

Class schedule: Alternating weeks, two hours per session.

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1 to November 1, 2026 (one term)

Salary per term (two term course):    $4,998.74 for Sessional Lecturer I;

$5,349.61 for Sessional Lecturer I Long Term;

$5,349.61 for Sessional Lecturer II;

$5,476.98 for Sessional Lecturer III,

inclusive of vacation pay

Qualifications:

The applicant must hold an advanced degree (MSc; MHSc; PhD) in the field of genetics, genomics, molecular biology or a related field. The applicant should have professional / work experience in the field of genome analysis and variant interpretation.

Description of duties:

The course is structured as one two-hour session weekly for eight weeks from early September to mid-November. Most sessions will contain a combination of lecture content delivered by the instructor, guest lectures and discussion or small group work.  The instructor is expected to invite and coordinate guest lecture sessions, attend all sessions, prepare for the lecture beforehand based on existing lecture content and assignments, and to answer student questions.

The course has been taught for four years.  The successful applicant will be working with the course materials of the professor who previously taught this course and will have the support of the previous course instructor and program director. A complete course syllabus, course slides, assignments and answer keys / rubrics, and other critical components have already been designed, optimized, and used successfully.  Minimal modification of these materials may be required to update them for use this year.
