Course description:
This graduate course is offered within the MHSc Medical Genomics program and is restricted to students enrolled in that program. The Genomic Methodology course teaches the theory and practice of molecular biology relevant to genetic and genomic testing. The course covers classic, modern and emerging genetic methods with a focus on computational techniques to analyze genomic data. Students who complete this course will understand the scientific principles underlying genomic tests, examine the limitations and applications of current tests, and will have the necessary background to understand and analyze new assays.
This course is co-taught with another faculty member in the Molecular Genetics Department. The sessional lecturer would be responsible teaching 1-half term (0.5 FCE, 7-weeks) in the winter.

Salary: $9,997.48 for Sessional Lecturer I; $10,699.22 for Sessional Lecturer I Long Term; $10,699.22 for Sessional Lecturer II; $10,953.96 for Sessional Lecturer III, inclusive of vacation pay

Qualifications:
The applicant must hold an advanced degree (MD or PhD) in the field of genetics, genomics, molecular biology or a related field. The applicant should have previous teaching experience at the University level, and be experienced with concepts in genomic methodologies, including DNA-based methods. The applicant must also have experience with computational pipelines for sequencing data analysis, and using command-line programs and R packages.
Description of duties:
The course is structured as three weekly two-hour lecture & tutorial sessions each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning from 10:00am-12:00pm for 7-weeks in the winter term. Class structure varies depending on the topic covered, but often involves an instructor-led lecture and hands-on, instructor-led tutorials. The instructor is expected to attend all sessions, prepare for the lecture beforehand based on existing lecture content and assignments, and to answer student questions.
The course has been co-taught for eight years by two professors. The successful applicant will teach this course in collaboration with another professor who has taught the course before:
Winter term, weeks 1-7 (January – March) will be taught by successful applicant.
Winter term, weeks 8-12 (March – April) will be taught by current faculty.
The successful applicant will also have the support of a teaching assistant. A complete course syllabus, course slides, assignments and answer keys / rubrics, and other critical components have already been designed, optimized, and used successfully. Minimal modification of these materials may be required to update them for use this year.
