Course number and title:   EES1119H - Quantitative Environmental Analysis

Course description:  This course provides an introduction to the field of ecological statistics. Students will become familiar with several methods of statistical analysis of categorical and multivariate environmental data. The course will provide a comprehensive presentation of the methods: analysis of variance, regression analysis, structural equation modeling, ordination (principal component & factor analysis) and classification (cluster & discriminant analysis) methods, and basic concepts of Bayesian analysis. Emphasis will be placed on how these methods can be used to identify significant cause-effect relationships, detect spatiotemporal trends, and assist environment management by elucidating ecological patterns (e.g., classification of aquatic ecosystems based on their trophic status, assessment of climate variability signature on ecological time series, landscape analysis). The course will consist of 3 hr-lectures/tutorials where the students will be introduced to the basic concepts of the statistical methods.

Number of Hours: 0.5 FCE 

Sessional dates of appointment: Specific duties will occur between September 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026.  

Salary:  Starting September 1, 2025 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9,820.70 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $10,510.04 for a Sessional Lecturer I-Long Term; $10,510.4 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,760.23 for an Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term; $10,760.23 Sessional Lecturer III; and $11,030.34 for a Sessional Lecturer III-Long Term. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. The rate of pay is established by the Collective Agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3902 Unit 3 and the University of Toronto. 

Minimum qualifications:  PhD degree in Environmental Statistics and/or Informatics.
Research experience and peer-reviewed publications in quantitative ecology. The selected candidate should have advanced programming skills in R or Python and significant experience with model-based management of biodiversity and species-at-risk problems.

Past teaching experience is a more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Preparation of lectures and labs, lecturing, creation of exams, term tests and assignments, marking and marks management and participation in the instructor/course evaluation process by the students.

Lectures are currently scheduled on Fridays 1 PM - 4 PM
