Course number and title:  EESC22H3 - Environmental Geophysics 

Course description:  This course instructs students on the application of geophysical techniques (including gravity and magnetic surveys, electromagnetics, resistivity and seismology) to important environmental issues, such as monitoring climate change and natural hazards, clean energy assessments, and how to build sustainable cities. This lecture-based course teaches students the societal importance of environmental geophysics as well as how to effectively communicate uncertainty when interpreting data.

Sessional dates of appointment: Specific duties will occur between September 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026.  

Salary:  Starting September 1, 2026 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9,997.48 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $10,699.22 for a Sessional Lecturer I-Long Term; $10,699.22 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,953.96 for an Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term; $10,953.96 Sessional Lecturer III; and $11,228.90 for a Sessional Lecturer III-Long Term. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. The rate of pay is established by the Collective Agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3902 Unit 3 and the University of Toronto. 

Minimum qualifications:  A Ph.D. or a M.Sc. degree specializing in geophysics. Experience teaching a course in geophysical techniques and the underlying principles at the university level is required. A Professional Geoscientist of Ontario (P.Geo.) designation is an asset. The ideal candidate should have experience with planning and guiding geophysical surveys, processing, and interpretation. Previous experience operating ground-penetrating radar, resistivity, and seismic survey equipment (including sub-bottom profilers) and demonstrating the use of processing software (KKO_Project, RES2DINV, REFLEXW, EdgeTech Discover) in a similar course is highly desirable. We are seeking previous experience in teaching, teaching excellence, mastery of subject area, geoscience background, scientific research, and field experience. Knowledge of appropriate local field sites, safe fieldwork practices, and First Aid Certification is preferred.  

Past teaching experience is a more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.  

Description of duties:  

The instructor will be responsible for effectively delivering the course with all the attendant organizational issues of lecture and practical preparation and delivery, setting, supervision and marking of assignments/exams, final course marks, course evaluations, and holding regular office hours in person.

Lectures: Mondays 3:00PM-5:00PM
