Job summary:
THE OPPORTUNITY – Housing Services Practitioner, Complex Needs – High River/Okotoks
The Housing Services Practitioner (Complex Needs) supports persons with disabilities, who have complex needs, to live as independently as possible in the most appropriate living environment consistent with Vecova’s Mission, Vision, Values and Guiding Principles. This includes ensuring consumers are safe and involved in decisions and activities so they can be successful in their home and community.
This position provides direct support to persons with a disability with a medical or mental health diagnosis. Hours of work and location are dependent on the needs of the consumers, team and Vecova’s organizational needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide Community Access supports Primarily in the city of Okotoks and potentially in the city of Calgary to a male consumer to pursue his activities of interest, volunteering and recreation.
- Assist individuals in developing social skills, building meaningful relationships, and becoming valued and included members of their community
- Provide person-centered support that recognizes each individual’s unique strengths, goals, and challenges
- Identify behaviours of concern and contribute to the development, review, and monitoring of plans that help individuals manage behaviours or situations of concern
- Assist or provide full support in personal care routines such as bathing, dressing, and grooming
- Assist or provide full support to individuals in maintaining their health, including attending medical appointments, administering medication, liaising with pharmacies, supporting emotional well-being, and promoting healthy lifestyles
- Provide comprehensive support in home maintenance and daily living activities, including meal preparation, grocery shopping, cleaning, and laundry — particularly in homes with complex medical needs
- Support individuals in managing their personal affairs such as budgeting, banking, and paying bills
Qualifications:
- Diploma and/or Degree in Community Rehabilitation, Disability Studies or a related social science
- Minimum of two years of experience working with individuals with disabilities or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience
- Comfort with consistent engagement with individuals, including those who do not use words to communicate
- Demonstrated skill in critical thinking
- Demonstrate a high standard of professionalism aligned with Vecova values
- A Class 5 (no GDL) Driver’s license with reliable vehicle is required
- Well-developed and effective communication skills (written and oral), demonstrated critical thinking and a proven ability to identify issues and advocate for client
- Medication administration experience
- Demonstrates problem solving, caring, compassion and understanding while at the same time aware of professional boundaries
- Confidentiality with handling highly sensitive and confidential information
