About the Initiate Youth Innovation Program

We are launching a new project aimed at Youth! The “Initiate Youth Innovation” project aims to distribute 160 microgrants to youth living in rural, remote and northern communities in Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Newfoundland and Labrador, British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Through this project, 160 micro-grants ranging from $1,000- $5,000, will be distributed to individuals or groups with community development projects.

Position Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated part-time (15 hours per week) Communications and Outreach Coordinator to help deliver the Initiate Youth Innovation project. Guided by the values and needs of youth living in rural and remote northern communities, the Coordinator will work with the Project Manage to lead on outreach efforts, develop culturally relevant communications, and build strong relationships with youth, schools, and community partners.

The Coordinator will report directly to the Initiate Program Manager, and also work with various staff at Small Economy Works.

The Coordinator will:

• Collaborate with the Project Manager to design and implement a marketing strategy to recruit youth participants
• Engage and inspire youth by facilitating information sessions, webinars, and events
• Integrate local values, cultural practices, and examples into outreach and promotional activities to ensure they resonate with diverse youth communities
• Build relationships with northern school boards, high schools, mentors, and youth organizations to identify and support motivated youth in applying for the microgrants
• Create and manage inclusive, engaging, and supportive communication strategies that reflect the unique challenges and opportunities in rural and northern regions
• Regularly report to and collaborate with the Project Manager to ensure project outcomes are being met

Responsibilities

Stakeholder and Community Engagement:

• Build and nurture relationships with local and regional stakeholders, including school boards, high schools, youth organizations, and community leaders.
• Collaborate with northern-based school boards to identify motivated youth who are interested in applying for microgrants
• Identify and engage local mentors in remote and northern communities who can act as champions for youth, providing guidance and support on the ground

Marketing and Communications:

• Lead the development of communication strategies and marketing materials to raise awareness about the microgrant opportunities across all regions.
• Promote the project through social media, digital newsletters, and other channels, ensuring content is culturally relevant and engaging for youth in remote and northern communities.
• Lead the capture and sharing of stories from grant recipients and successful youth-led projects, using storytelling to highlight the impact of the grants and showcase youth innovation

Youth Advisory Committee Leadership:

• Act as a key leader for the Youth Advisory Committee, fostering youth leadership and ensuring their voices are represented in the development and implementation of the project.
• Organize regular meetings with the Youth Advisory Committee to gather input, feedback, and ideas for promoting the microgrant program.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in community programs, communications, or youth engagement in Northern Canada or with Indigenous youth across Canada.
• Experience coaching and mentoring youth.
• Familiarity with the needs and challenges facing youth in remote regions of Canada, especially within Indigenous and northern communities
• Demonstrated initiative, enthusiasm, creativity, and flexibility.
• Strong communication skills (both written and verbal), with the ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences
• Proficiency in digital communication tools (social media platforms, email campaigns, webinar platforms)
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders
