The primary worksite is UVic (Medical Sciences Building). Flexibility is required to attend events and information sessions outside the standard work hours (evenings and weekends). Travel to other sites locally and provincially is required periodically.
Effective July 1, 2024, the salary range for this position is:
Recruitment range: $62,989- $69,444 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
Performance range: starting salary to max of $81,896 is available through annual performance increases.

The Island Medical Program (IMP), based at the University of Victoria (UVic), is part of the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Medicine (FoM) MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP) and is one of 4 distributed sites situated across the province. The remaining provincial sites are: the Northern Medical Program (NMP), Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) and the Southern Medical Program (SMP). The mandate of the IMP is to deliver the UBC MDUP, with an emphasis on training students in community and rural settings across Vancouver Island. IMP training sites are located across the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Kwakwaka'wakw, Nuu-chah-nulth, and Coast Salish peoples. In addition to the general application process, the FoM offers four specialized admissions pathways including the Northern and Rural, Indigenous student, Black student, and MD/PhD pathways.
Mandate:
The Black Initiatives Coordinator provides support to both prospective and current Black medical students, and conducts recruitment outreach, community and relationship building. With direction from the UBC FoM's Admissions Office, this position will also participate in the general Admissions process for the MDUP. The Black Initiatives Coordinator regularly liaises with UBC, UVic, Island Health, and community agencies and is responsible for the coordination and delivery of services to Black students. The position interacts regularly with students, frequently of a confidential nature and acts as advocate on the behalf of students when required.
Objectives:
- The Black Initiatives Coordinator represents the UBC FoM and provides guidance and relevant program details to prospective Black applicants and collaborates with the local and provincial team to support the growth of the Black Student MD Admissions Pathway.
- The Black Initiatives Coordinator develops, implements, and manages a wide range of support services, programs, and initiatives for MDUP Black medical students. The incumbent is not an academic advisor, but is expected to identify resources, guide, and inform students on policies and procedures, and liaise with those who are subject matter experts in support of the students.
This position reports to the UVic Manager, Strategy and Administration, and receives operational direction from the UBC Black Student Initiatives Manager, MDUP. Flexibility is required to attend events and information sessions outside the standard work hours (evenings and weekends). Travel to other sites locally and provincially is required periodically.
Job RequirementsThis position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree, plus 3 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and tailor communication style for different audiences and situations.

- Experience developing presentations and presenting to groups.
- Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills preferably in a healthcare, medical education environment, post-secondary education, or large institution.
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Proficiency with computer applications (i.e., MS-Office Suite, Adobe Create Suite, content management systems, presentation tools).
