Position Purpose summary

The food bank supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Vernon Salvation Army food bank's facility, including the client-choice marketplace, warehouse, food sorting and storage areas, and delivery/food recovery driver operations. Ensures the facility operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with food safety regulations and Food Banks Canada's Standards of Excellence (SOE). The supervisor plays a central role in maintaining a welcoming client experience while safeguarding the integrity of food handling, inventory, and reporting data across the operation.

Accountabilities

Daily operations

• Coordinate the daily operations of the food bank, including the marketplace, warehouse, front desk, and driver functions.
• Provide in-scope supervision and advice to drivers, front desk, marketplace, and warehouse staff.
• Support staff and volunteer safety and performance by providing guidance, feedback, and timely resolution of issues as needed
• Schedule drivers for delivery, pick-up, and food recovery routes.
• Participate on regular staff and volunteer safety meetings.
• Maintain a welcoming, respectful environment for clients accessing the marketplace shopping model.

Food Safety & Regulatory Compliance

• Hold overall responsibility for food safety practices among staff and volunteers.
• Ensure sorting, handling, and storage practices in the perishable sorting area meet food safety requirements.
• Ensure food safety, volunteer management, and food distribution practices align with Food Banks Canada's Standards of Excellence (SOE).

Workplace Safety & Facility Management

• Oversee workplace safety practices, including the safe operation of pallet jacks and other warehouse equipment.
• Ensure cleaning and housekeeping standards are maintained across the warehouse, marketplace, front desk and back-of-house areas.
• Monitor the condition and cleanliness of walk-in coolers and freezers.

Volunteer Management

• Support volunteers across front desk, marketplace, warehouse, and driving functions.
• Ensure volunteer practices align with SOE/SA requirements.
• Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT

• Minor material responsibility. Regular responsibility for minor financial matters and for wise use of own resources.
• The Incumbent is involved in minor financial responsibility or on a relief basis and is responsible for the wise use of their department resources.
• They may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash.

The Incumbent has very little input into the annual budget or revenue projections.

Working Conditions

The Incumbent will work under the following conditions:

• Dirt/dust/ temperature variations
• Work-related stress
• Angry and abusive people
• Work schedule affecting lifestyle.
• Warehouse and client-facing retail (marketplace) environment.
• Regular exposure to cold storage areas (walk-in coolers and freezers).
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting of food product (up to 50 lbs.) and supplies.
• Use of warehouse equipment, including pallet jacks.

The Incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury, or illnesses due to:

• Physical attacks by others
• Exposure to infectious diseases
• Exposure to pests and vermin
• Emergency response situations (fire, bomb threat, etc.)
• Other potentially dangerous situations

The Incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

• Universal Precautions
• Follow procedures established by policy and legislation.
• Comply with all safety procedures.
• Ensure proper lifting, twisting & reaching techniques are used during job performance.

education, experience, AND Qualifications:

• Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
• Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
• Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
• Alternative combination of education and Experience may be considered.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

• Completion of a formal post-secondary program of two academic years in a related field.
• Emergency First Aid & CPR, Non-Violence Certificate, and Mental Health First Aid Certificate or willingness to complete once hired.

Experience and Knowledge

• At least two years of prior related experience, including experience in a food bank, food rescue or warehouse environment.

• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract.

• Experience with warehouse management software is an asset.
• Fluent in spoken and written English.
• Willingness and ability to complete training as required by contract or The Salvation Army.
• Willingness and ability to complete WHMIS & Universal Precautions training (to be completed during probation period).
• Willingness and ability to complete online new hire health and safety training (to be completed during probation period).
• Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $45,045.00 to $56,316.00 with a maximum of $67,567.50.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
