About the Opportunity The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) supports a health, safety and wellness service within the zone, providing prevention and management of occupational and non‑occupational injuries and illnesses. The primary goal is to provide confidential nursing care, promote healthy lifestyles, and enhance productivity and well‑being for employees and managers.
Responsibilities and Scope of Practice Conduct pre‑placement health screenings.
Provide health education and injury prevention strategies.
Lead health promotion programs such as the annual influenza immunization campaign.
Implement health surveillance programs.
Offer communicable disease follow‑up and prevention education.
Manage blood and body fluid exposure follow‑up and education.
Advocate for workers and worker groups to promote a safe, healthy work environment.
Collaborate with employers, unions, health professionals, and other stakeholders to support health goals.
Perform delegated medical acts and medication or immunization administration as required.
Qualifications Post‑secondary degree in Nursing.
Two years experience in Occupational Health Nursing required; in the absence of this, a combination of Occupational Health Nursing and general Nursing experience will be considered.
Current registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nurses.
Diploma or certificate in Occupational Health Nursing or Public/Community Health Nursing preferred; working toward completion is acceptable.
Certified in Occupational Health Nursing Canada (COHN/C) preferred.
Knowledge of occupational injuries, illnesses and diseases, and relevant legislation (NS Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations, WHMIS, Workers Compensation Act, Safer Needles in Healthcare Workplaces Act, Privacy legislation).
Knowledge of infectious/communicable diseases and occupational management for exposure in healthcare workers.
Strong communication and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to develop and deliver teaching programs on health promotion, disease prevention, and injury prevention (individual and group).
Demonstrated case‑management skills and experience.
Commitment to ongoing professional development and upgrading.
Knowledge of Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) and other community resources.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
Multi‑linguistic competencies are an asset; French preferred.
Hours, Compensation and Benefits Long assignment full‑time position; approximately 75 hours biweekly for a 12‑month duration. Travel to various sites may be required. Compensation ranges from $45.93 to $54.97 per hour; $56.90 per hour for nurses with 25 years of experience. Successful candidates may be eligible for a benefits package that includes health, dental, travel, long‑term disability, life insurance and a defined benefit pension plan.
Additional Information Educational support may be provided to obtain an OHN certificate course with a return‑of‑service agreement.
