Waugh Family Chair in Multiple Sclerosis

The Department of Internal Medicine, the Max Rady College of Medicine, and Shared Health Manitoba are inviting applications for the Waugh Family Chair in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The chair provides salary support and operating funds for investigator‑driven independent research in MS. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor, appointable only for candidates who hold an existing rank of Assistant Professor or higher.

Position Details

Geographical, full‑time, contingent position for a 5‑year term, renewable upon favourable review. Applications will be accepted until filled but should be submitted no later than June 1, 2026. The start date will be negotiated based on the applicant’s availability.

Responsibilities

A chairholder will serve within the MS program at the Health Sciences Centre, reporting to the Department Head of Internal Medicine, Provincial Specialty Lead – Internal Medicine (Shared Health), and the Section Head of Neurology. Key responsibilities include:

• Leading a research program focused on MS, producing translational, clinical, or epidemiologic research with the potential to advance cures, treatments, and patient care.
• Obtaining and effectively managing external research funding.
• Mentoring and training graduate students, residents, and post‑doctoral scholars.
• Fostering research collaborations locally, nationally, and internationally.
• Engaging with the university’s diverse research centres, such as the Manitoba Multiple Sclerosis Research Centre and the Manitoba Center for Proteomics and Systems Biology.

Qualifications

• Canadian citizenship or eligibility to become a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
• Eligibility for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba.
• MD, MD/MSC, or MD/PhD with specialty qualifications in Neurology in the country of current practice, and eligibility to apply for specialty certification in Neurology by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, if not already certified.
• A documented record of excellence in translational, clinical, or epidemiologic research in MS.
• Evidence of productivity, external funding, mentorship, and collaborative research experience.
