Purpose:

Why Not City Missions is seeking a compassionate, capable, and values-aligned leader to work under the Executive Director as the Program Manager for our SHYP (Supportive Housing for Young Parents) program, a supportive housing program for young female parents ages 16-25 and their children. This highly relational role is built on case management, team leadership, and program coordination. The Program Manager (SHYP) oversees a staff team of 2-4 team members, as well as a growing volunteer base. The SHYP primary house accommodates up to four young mothers and their children, and the second-stage housing program accommodates up to another four young mothers and their children. The Program Manager’s responsibilities include: Program Oversight, Team Leadership, Client Care, Programming, and Facility Management.

About the SHYP Program:

The SHYP Program was launched in 2022 as a way to support young mothers in need of safe housing and parenting skills development. SHYP clients receive extensive classes and support for prenatal and parenting skills and life skills (finance, cooking, cleaning, etc.). There is also support for meeting educational goals. Clients typically participate in programming for one year and have the option of moving into the second-stage housing program for another year, pending availability.

Why Not City Missions is Christian nonprofit organization with multiple services. Since 2002, Why Not City Missions has served the community of Brantford, Ontario by providing support to homeless and at-risk youth ages 13-25. Our mission is to “Empower Youth through Relationship,” and our vision is that Brantford’s youth would have the support they need to thrive in their potential and purpose.

We use team mentorship and a responsive, trauma-informed approach to youth services. The youth who utilize our services have a few things in common: almost all live in poverty, most only have contact with one or fewer of their parents, and even fewer have a safe, consistent place to live. Some of the other challenges that plague our teen community members are bullying, substance dependency, mental illness, unplanned pregnancies, criminal activity, abuse, poverty, lost identification, and dropping out of school.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Oversight

• Ensure that SHYP operates in a way that is consistent with Why Not City Mission’s Mission, Vision, and Charter
• Provide highly responsive programming oversight to SHYP, ensuring clients are equipped, resourced, and supported in a trauma-informed manner that empowers them to meet their goals
• Develop and regularly revise policies and procedures, program application and agreements, intake forms, and client manual with support from the Executive Director
• Ensure program works within the provided budget

Team Leadership

• Model servant leadership to a deeply passionate team of staff and volunteers to ensure seamless support of clients in all areas
• Train all program-related staff and volunteers in SHYP processes and communication standards
• Conduct regular team meetings with client support staff, volunteers, and placement students
• Hold 1:1 meetings monthly with client support staff
• Hold full team staff meetings
• Identify training needs for staff
• Set the standard for compassionate, trauma-informed care for clients
• SLACK: Report on daily happenings; Highlight successes or concerns related to client behaviour, progress, or decisions; Communicate anything that will be needed by other staff in order to continue seamless continuity of care within the home
• Maintain a visitor log for guests to the facility

Client Care

• Complete client intake, including interviews and documentation, with oversight and guidance from Executive Director
• On a rotating basis, cover weekends for serious issues or staff questions when needed
• Communicate and coordinate client goals, program participation, and progress with the team
• Serve as the final voice of authority within the house while on duty
• Ensure team follow through on any decisions made
• Conduct or delegate bi-weekly room inspections or as needed for each client

Programming

• Ensure programming is aligned with the Why Not City Missions mission, vision, and charter, while also adapting to the shifts in client needs that occur with client changeover and changing circumstances
• Collaboratively design and implement programming, including schedule management
• Lead goal-setting with clients with their future independence in mind
• Co-create plans with clients for accomplishing their goals on reasonable timelines
• Coordinate additional supports and resources for clients that support their goals, including use of outside service providers
• Maintain thorough, up-to-date client records using Case Management Sheets

Facility

• Ensure safety and well-being of clients when on shift, mitigate any emerging concerns
• Ensure that access to the facility is limited to clients, staff, authorized visitors and service providers
• Coordinate small, large, and major cleaning projects in collaboration with staff, clients, and volunteers
• Coordinate with housing partners for any facility repairs or maintenance issues

What you will bring:

• 5+ years of nonprofit or social service experience
• 5+ years team leadership experience in a relevant setting
• Successful history of work with youth
• High emotional intelligence with capacity and strengths in:

• Personal alignment with Why Not City Mission’s charter
• Valid “G” class driver’s license with own vehicle
• Clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check (or ability to acquire one before starting)
• Postsecondary education preferred (SSW, CYW, BSW, etc.) or combined experience
• Ability to meet all physical demands of the role, which include:
• Climbing stairs in the multi-story facility
• Hands-on housework work alongside clients
• Driving clients and their children when needed
• Carrying supplies and lifting up children when appropriate
• Periodic travel for meetings and appointments
