Clinical Fellow - Medicine for the Elderly

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. The shift pattern for this post is weekday 9-5 with additional shifts evenings and weekend daytime periodically

This is a Fixed term post for 12 Months

You will join a large team of resident doctors in the department of medicine for the elderly. The post has not been approved for Training purposes by NES. However, the department has an enthusiastic team of consultants and an education faculty which will support you in your development during this post. All successful candidates will be allocated an educational supervisor and will be eligible to apply for Scottish Online Appraisal Resource (SOAR) account, which will be used as a record of clinical experience and skills gained during this post.

Duties Of The Post

The Clinical Fellow will support the Consultants in the wards to which they are attached, within the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Gartnavel General Hospital or New Victoria Hospital.

Teaching and training on the wards will be provided with a named Clinical and Educational Supervisor.

These posts are service posts and do not have recognition for training by postgraduate medicine. However, the department has an enthusiastic team of consultants and an education faculty who will support you in your development during this post. All successful candidates will be allocated an educational supervisor and will be eligible to apply for funding to engage in appropriate courses for personal development. Additionally SOAR accounts will be provided to log development and to record annual appraisal for each successful applicant.

Key Tasks

• The post holder is required to attend punctually at the wards and carry out such duties there and elsewhere, as may be assigned to them by the Consultant in Administrative charge of the department to which he/she is appointed for the care of the patients; and to deal with emergencies.
• The post holder will be responsible for examining and reporting to the Consultant staff on all patients to the wards and for arranging such investigations and treatment as the Consultants request.
• The post holder will record the history of each patient in the form and in the manner prescribed.
• The post holder will remain on call in the wards unless another Doctor, designated with the approval of the Clinician in Administrative Charge, has been notified to the wards as being on call: provided the conditions of his patients permit his temporary absence.
• The post holder will supply the doctor to whose care a patient is transferred on leaving the wards with all the necessary medical information in writing. The post holder will maintain patient confidentiality i.e. no information about patients should be divulged to any other person except members of the hospital staff without the written authority of the patient or the District Medical Officer.
• The post holder is not empowered to refuse information about a patient from a registered medical practitioner but he may refer such requests to the consultant staff of his unit.

This list of duties is not exhaustive, however, is intended to reflect some of the duties which the post holder will be expected to undertake.

Rota

This post is a 2B rota including long days and weekends on a 10 week rolling rota pattern covering the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gartnavel General Hospital and the New Victoria Hospital OOH.

Minimal Qualification

• Full GMC registration with licence to practice
• Valid UK Advanced Life Support Certification or equivalent
• Completion of foundation training within past 3.5 years or valid CREST form
• Demonstrates competence in range of common medical/geriatric medicine presentations
• Understand the principles of medical audit/QI work
• Involvement in postgraduate/undergraduate teaching

Desirable

• Experience in geriatric medicine
• Experience working in UK National Health Service
• Evidence of participation in clinical governance through QI work
