Registered Nurse, Pediatrics (Abbotsford)

Overview In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, and working collaboratively with the inter‑qualified care team in the provision of person‑centered care, the Registered Nurse, Pediatrics provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, providing and evaluating nursing care to pediatric patients in a pediatric inpatient unit and/or select ambulatory day clinics.
Responsibilities Conducts a comprehensive nursing assessment on admission and at regular intervals.
Assesses patients and collects information from a variety of sources using observation, communication, data review and physical assessment.
Makes a nursing diagnosis and determines whether the condition can be improved or resolved by an appropriate nursing intervention.
Identifies risk factors.
Plans, performs and evaluates nursing interventions and care.
Collaborates with patients, families, physicians and the inter‑professional care team to develop, implement and modify the care plan.
Establishes a therapeutic relationship by demonstrating empathy, trust and respect, advocating for patients’ rights to privacy, dignity and information, and ensuring choice and autonomy.
Participates in the care and discharge planning process and updates the care plan as needed.
Coordinates nursing care, sets priorities, delegates tasks to support staff and makes referrals according to protocols.
Teaches patients and families health prevention, restoration and maintenance to achieve health goals.
Assesses learning needs and provides information/demonstration of care activities.
Initiates referrals to appropriate health care/community agencies in collaboration with the inter‑professional team.
Documents assessments, diagnoses, observations, interventions, outcomes and referrals as per standards.
Participates in in‑services and educational programs.
Identifies learning goals and maintains current clinical competence.
Acts as a preceptor or mentor for new staff and students.
Participates in designated programs, committees, conferences, and councils.
Provides feedback on patient care programs, policies and equipment.
Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities and reports concerns through the Patient Safety & Learning System.
Participates in research and special projects.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Graduated from an approved School of Nursing.
Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BCCNM.
One year of recent, related clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area and completion of postgraduate coursework or certification applicable to the area or an equivalent combination.
Skills and Abilities Clinical proficiency in the designated clinical area.
Ability to complete ongoing patient assessment and apply pediatric nursing theory to provide care.
Ability to recognize acuity changes.
Ability to use factual information and evidence‑based practice to support nursing decisions.
Effective communication with patients, families, public, medical staff and inter‑professional team.
Promotion of person‑centered care and patient advocacy.
Ability to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem‑solve.
Proficiency in initiating and maintaining intravenous therapy.
Planning, organizing and prioritizing work in a changing environment.
Independent work and collaboration with the inter‑professional team.
Teaching and instruction of patients and community partners.
Ability to deal with and promote change.
Operation of related equipment and computer applications.
