Staff Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner - Theatres, Anaesthetics, and Critical Care

The Role
As part of an enhanced network of care for major trauma patients in Scotland, the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital has been identified as one of four major trauma centres. Due to this expanding service we are looking for experienced perioperative staff with expert Perioperative skills to support this development within the Adult Theatres at the QEUH.
We can expand your skills and knowledge across a fascinating and diverse range of cases. Our enthusiastic education team will guide and support your learning and education development in the Perioperative Roles. You will be a First Level Registered Nurse trained in general nursing or adult nursing or a Registered Operating Department Practitioner. Experience in Scrub/theatre practice and/or Anaesthetics and/or Recovery is desirable.
As part of the multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for assessing care needs, developing programmes of care, and implementing and evaluating these programmes, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients within the perioperative department. The ability to work on your own initiative but also as part of an integrated team is required. The South Sector Theatres undertake a Perioperative dual training programme supported by the GGC Centre of Clinical Perioperative Excellence. You will be supported in post-registration education by the Perioperative Education Teams and will have access to training and education pertinent to the job.
Furthermore, you will be expected where necessary to engage in multi-site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde South Sector in order to achieve the needs of the service. As part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s pre-employment checking for all appointed candidates, evidence of current NMC/HCPC registration will be required prior to start date. You should therefore note candidates who are unable to provide confirmation of current NMC/HCPC registration, in line with projected start date for this post, may not be shortlisted for interview. This post requires PVG Scheme Membership/Disclosure Scotland Check.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
- This is a permanent, full-time post of 36 hours per week
- The role is based at L02 Theatres, QEUH, 1345 Govan Road, G51 4TF
- You are required to demonstrate flexibility by working within a service that runs over a seven day week and includes out of hours working
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical: To assess patient needs, plan/implement and evaluate a programme of person-centred care which is evidence based utilising all available resources taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background and ensure involvement with the patient, family, carers and significant others.
- Maintain patient records in line with NMC/HPC guidelines for records and record keeping.
Professional
- Practice within the legal & Ethical framework as established by Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) Health professions council (HPC) and National Legislation to ensure patient interests and well being are met.
- Work within the National Health Service (NHS), NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and Procedures. Empower patients to take responsibility for their health, well-being and future lifestyle by practising in an open transparent and inclusive manner, thereby ensuring patients have the relevant information to participate in decisions about their care.
- Respect confidential information obtained in the course of duty and refrain from disclosing such information without the consent of the patient/client or a person entitled to act on his/her behalf except where disclosure is required by law or by the order of a Court or is necessary in the public interest.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job
- First Level Registered Nurse on NMC register (Part 1, 7 and 12)
- OR Registered Operating Department Practitioner on HPC register
- Ability to work shifts required to provide the service including night duty and public holidays. Ability to work on any site within GG&C when required.
Desirable
- Recent experience within an operating theatre or immediate postoperative recovery room environment (HDU experience and experience during training may be relevant)
- Post registration qualification relevant to perioperative care
