Meter Technician/Labourer

Meridia Recruitment Solutions has partnered with the Town of Antigonish to recruit a Meter Technician/Labourer to join their Public Works Department in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.


The Town of Antigonish is a vibrant and growing community committed to delivering high-quality municipal services to residents and businesses. As part of the Public Works Department, you will support the delivery of essential municipal services through water meter installation and maintenance, water distribution support, infrastructure operations, and a variety of public works activities that contribute to the effective operation of municipal services throughout the Town.



This is a permanent, full-time, unionized position with regular hours of Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.



Role Description
Reporting to the Working Foreperson/Supervisor or Manager of the Public Works Department, the Meter Technician/Labourer is responsible for the installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and replacement of residential and commercial water meters within the municipal water distribution system. This role supports accurate water consumption measurement and customer service while contributing to broader Public Works operations and infrastructure maintenance activities.



Your responsibilities will include:

• Installing, inspecting, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting residential and commercial water meters.
• Performing routine and special meter readings to support accurate billing and water consumption monitoring.
• Investigating and resolving meter-related issues, including consumption concerns, leaks, and service discrepancies.
• Responding professionally to customer inquiries regarding water meters, water usage, and related municipal services.
• Maintaining accurate records of meter installations, repairs, replacements, readings, and inventory.
• Supporting inventory management of water meters, parts, and related equipment.
• Assisting with water and wastewater infrastructure maintenance and operational activities.
• Supporting road maintenance and repair activities, including asphalt, gravel, and concrete work.
• Assisting with municipal utility locates and asset management data collection.
• Operating municipal tools, equipment, and vehicles in a safe and effective manner.
• Participating in seasonal operations, including snow and ice control activities.
• Complying with Provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation, municipal policies, and safety procedures.
• Performing general labour duties and other related responsibilities as assigned.

Your Qualifications
As the ideal candidate, you are a mechanically inclined and service-oriented individual who takes pride in supporting essential municipal infrastructure. You enjoy a combination of technical and hands-on work, communicate effectively with the public, and are committed to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.



Key qualifications include:

• High School education or equivalent.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain equipment.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, and vehicles used in municipal operations.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments and adapt to changing operational priorities.
• Commitment to workplace health and safety practices and procedures.
• A valid Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver's License is required.
• Willingness and ability to attain and maintain Water Distribution Operator Class I and Wastewater Collection Operator Class I certification requirements.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience related to water meter installation, maintenance, repair, plumbing, municipal public works, utility operations, or infrastructure services.



The following certifications are considered an asset:

• Red Seal Plumbing Certification.
• Plumbing experience or related trade experience.
• Experience with water meter installation, maintenance, or repair.
• Municipal public works or utility operations experience.
• First Aid/CPR.
• Confined Space Entry.
• Traffic Control Person.
• Fall Protection.
• Temporary Workplace Signage.
• WHMIS.

Proof of certifications and licences will be required, and candidates may be required to complete a skills assessment as part of the recruitment process.
