Rate of pay: Recruitment Range: $26.01-$29.73 per hour
Growth Range: up to $33.44 per hour

Schedule: Temporary (until June 2027) full-time hours are 32 hours per week
Monday to Thursday, 8 hours per day inclusive of a one-hour paid lunch break.
Hours may be flexible and include times of up to 40 hours per week including
Fridays based on operational needs.  

Important notes:
The successful candidate will be required to provide an acceptable Vulnerable Sector  Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Education Manager, the Student Advocate and Facilitator (Grades 9–12) plays a key role in supporting the success and well-being of on Esquimalt Nation secondary students on our Nominal Roll. This position provides individualized academic, social, and emotional support while building trusting relationships with students, families, and school partners.

The Student Advocate and Facilitator works collaboratively with educators, students, and families to strengthen student engagement, confidence, and educational outcomes. The role also includes the coordination of one-on-one tutoring, and facilitation of community engagement opportunities that elevate the voices of Esquimalt Nation youth and families in education.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Support & Advocacy
  • Provide individualized academic and emotional support to Esquimalt Nation students in Grades 9–12.
  • Collaborate with educators to address student needs and promote inclusive learning environments.
  • Identify barriers to student success and connect students to appropriate school personnel, services, or community resources.
  • Tutor and coach students to build academic skills, confidence, and independence in specific curriculum areas.
  • Support post-secondary and career planning, including assistance with applications, funding, and transition supports.
  • Monitor student attendance and engagement, working proactively with schools and families to address challenges.


Program Delivery & Coordination

  • Facilitate and deliver 1:1 or small group tutoring for Grades 9–12.
  • Support the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), and Behavior Support Plans (BSPs).
  • Assist in the planning and supervision of social, cultural, or educational activities and events.
  • Gather, track, and report on student outcomes and program data to inform Local Education Agreement (LEA) discussions.


Community Engagement & Collaboration

  • Facilitate community engagement sessions or youth forums to ensure the voices of students and families inform education decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with parents/guardians to empower them as active partners in their children’s learning.
  • Represent Esquimalt Nation’s educational interests at school and district-level meetings as appropriate.
  • Align all activities with the goals outlined in Esquimalt Nation’s Education Department Strategic Plan, the Comprehensive Community Plan and the LEA.


Other related duties similar in scope and complexity as assigned.

TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12 (or equivalent) plus some post-secondary education in a related study (such as child and youth care, education, social work, or Indigenous studies, etc.) plus at least 2 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education (both formal and cultural) and experience (both professional and lived) will be considered. Additionally:
  • Experience working with Indigenous children, families, and communities
  • Anyone filling this position is required to provide and maintain a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check.
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel between the Nation office and schools.
  • All roles at the Nation require a genuine respect for, and openness to learning about, the Lekwungen People, culture, and ways of knowing.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong understanding of the BC public education system, including supports available for Indigenous students.
  • Competency in grade 9-12 academics with the ability to meaningfully support and tutor students
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusting, strength-based relationships with youth, families, and educators.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and interpersonal).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to adapt in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Technical proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and related tools.
  • Self-awareness and emotional intelligence, with the ability to maintain professionalism in complex situations.
  • Knowledge of Esquimalt Nation community and culture is an asset.
