Job Responsibility:
JOB SUMMARY
The Youth Recreation Programmer (YPR) is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing a variety of recreational programs and activities tailored for youth at the Burnside Gorge Community Centre. The YPR works directly with the youth to promote engagement, personal growth, and positive social interactions through recreational opportunities. This role includes overseeing program registration, supporting participants, and ensuring that all activities are well-organized and meet the needs of the community. The YPR collaborates with other community partners and staff to deliver dynamic programs that encourage youth involvement, healthy lifestyles, and community connection.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Design, implement, and facilitate recreational, social, and educational programs and activities for youth, ensuring that they meet the development needs and interest of participants. This includes program for Tillicum Community School and Colquitz Middle School students.
· Plan, implement, and lead a successful spring, summer, winter camp, providing a structured and engaging environment for youth to develop new skills, build relationships, and have fun.
· Strategize and collaborate on the creation of new programs and activities to meet evolving community needs and interests
· Assist in the promotion of programs and events using various platforms, including social media, posters, and event calendars, to ensure wide reach and engagement.
· Provide direct supervision of youth during programs and activities, ensuring their safety and well being. Address any issues or concerns promptly.
· Work collaboratively with youth, fellow BGCA staff, and external partners to ensure that programs effectively meet the needs of youth participants. Build positive relationships within the community to enhance program success.
· Recognize when additional support or services are needed for youth participants and refer them to appropriate resources and services.
· Assist with the upkeep and maintenance of the Youth Centre and program spaces, ensuring they are safe, clean, and functional for all activities.
· Maintain accurate records of participant attendance, program statistics, and expenses.
· Monitor and manage budgets for the Youth Centre, Tillicum School program, Colquitz Middle School program and camp budgets.
· Effectively communicate with supervisors, other BGCA departments, community partners, families and the public. Foster positive relationships to support program goals and community involvement.
· Follow all established BGCA policies and procedures, ensuring compliance and high standards in program delivery.
· Provide regular updates on program status, challenges and successes.
· Perform additional duties as directed by supervisor(s).
QUALIFICATIONS
· Education in Child and Youth Care, Recreation, Health Education, Social Work, or related fields is an asset (other relevant fields will also be considered)
· Previous experience working with children and youth is required
· Class 4 Drivers License is an asset
· Current CPR and First Aid Certification is required
· Criminal Record Clearance is required
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
· Ability to engage and communicate effectively with youth, parents, staff, community partners
· Active listening skills to understand the needs and concerns of youth participants and to appropriately respond to sensitive disclosures, ensuring confidently and safety
· Conflict resolution and mediation skills to manage challenging situations
· Understanding of child and adolescent development stages and how they affect behaviour and engagement
· Ability to implement behaviour intervention strategies to support positive youth behaviour in recreational settings
· Strong organizational and time management skills
· Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team
· Knowledge of local community services and resources to connect youth and families with relevant support.
· Ability to handle emergencies and crisis situations calmly and effectively
· Proficient in using computer programs (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets) and registration platforms for program management
· Ability to maintain accurate records, reports, and evaluations of programs
· Deep understanding of the unique challenges and needs of youth and to adapt programming as required.
· Ability to foster inclusive, positive, and safe environment for all youth participants
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
· This position requires a moderate level of physical activity. Direct delivery of service may include walking, hiking, running, swimming, standing, lifting, kneeling etc
· The Burnside Gorge Community Association encourages a spirit of contribution within the workplace. There is an expectation that staff will participate in community or special events on occasion throughout the year
HOURS OF WORK
30 hours per week, primarily Monday through Friday, increased to 35-37.5 hours per week during Spring, Summer and Winter Camps. Shifts vary depending on program schedule. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
