Position Overview:
FTC Innovation is seeking an experienced Director of Operations – Construction to lead and scale our national construction division.
This executive leadership position will be responsible for the overall operational and financial performance of construction activities across multiple regions. The successful candidate will oversee field operations, project delivery, workforce planning, equipment utilization, safety performance, client relationships, and strategic growth initiatives.
This role requires a leader who understands construction from the ground up while also possessing strong business and financial acumen. The ideal candidate can confidently manage a divisional P&L, understand financial statements, drive profitability, and build high-performing operational teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
• Lead and oversee construction operations across multiple provinces and projects
• Manage civil construction, HDD, hydrovac, aerial construction, fiber placement, splicing, restoration, utility, and telecommunications infrastructure programs
• Develop and implement operational strategies that support growth, efficiency, quality, and profitability
• Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with client requirements
• Oversee workforce planning, equipment utilization, subcontractor management, and resource allocation
• Establish operational KPIs and performance metrics across all business units
• Identify and implement process improvements to increase productivity and operational efficiency
• Monitor project performance and implement corrective action plans where necessary
Financial Leadership & P&L Ownership
• Own and manage the division's Profit & Loss statement
• Develop annual budgets, forecasts, and operational plans
• Review monthly financial statements and operational performance reports
• Monitor project profitability, labor productivity, equipment utilization, overhead recovery, and margin performance
• Analyze revenue, direct costs, indirect costs, cash flow, forecasting, and EBITDA performance
• Identify opportunities to improve profitability and reduce operational costs
• Partner with executive leadership on financial planning and strategic growth initiatives
• Evaluate capital expenditures and equipment investments
• Ensure projects are priced, staffed, and executed to achieve target margins
Team Leadership & Development
• Lead Operations Managers, Construction Managers, Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and Field Leadership teams
• Build a culture of accountability, ownership, safety, and continuous improvement
• Recruit, mentor, and develop future operational leaders
• Conduct regular performance reviews and succession planning initiatives
• Promote collaboration between operations, estimating, finance, safety, and business development teams
Client Relations & Business Growth
• Maintain strong relationships with key clients, partners, and stakeholders
• Participate in strategic planning and business development initiatives
• Support contract negotiations and project delivery strategies
• Assist estimating and proposal teams with operational input, costing strategies, and execution plans
• Evaluate new market opportunities and support geographic expansion efforts
• Represent FTC Innovation at industry events, client meetings, and executive presentations
Safety, Quality & Compliance
• Champion a safety-first culture across all operations
• Ensure compliance with company policies, client requirements, and regulatory standards
• Drive continuous improvement in HSE performance and quality assurance programs
• Support incident investigations and corrective action implementation
• Ensure all projects meet FTC Innovation's standards for quality, safety, and professionalism
Qualifications:
Required
• Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in construction, telecommunications, utilities, or infrastructure industries
• Proven experience managing large-scale, multi-million-dollar construction programs
• Demonstrated success leading operations across multiple geographic regions
• Strong understanding of construction methodologies, project controls, scheduling, procurement, and resource planning
• Proven experience managing departmental or divisional P&Ls
• Advanced understanding of:
- Profit & Loss Statements

- Cash Flow Management
- Forecasting & Budgeting
- Revenue Recognition
- Project Cost Controls
- Margin Analysis
- EBITDA Performance
• Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and decision-making skills
• Ability to travel as required
• Telecommunications construction experience
• Fiber optic infrastructure deployment experience
• Knowledge of HDD, hydrovac, underground utilities, aerial construction, and OSP network construction
• Experience with large-scale telecom, utility, or infrastructure programs
• Engineering, Construction Management, Business Degree, MBA, PMP, Gold Seal, or equivalent experience considered an asset
