About the Organization
The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, established in 1978, is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the region’s rich sports heritage across the Districts of Kenora, Rainy River, and Thunder Bay. Located in a historic facility in downtown Thunder Bay, the Hall of Fame includes a museum, archives, and library, and offers educational programming and tours for schools, community groups, and visitors.
Job Summary
The Curatorial Assistant will work under the supervision of the Curator and Executive Director to support the preservation and interpretation of Northwestern Ontario’s sports history. This role involves collections management, research, exhibit development, and participation in public and educational programming.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with records management and curatorial projects
- Catalog and digitize artifacts using PastPerfect software
- Photograph and scan collection items as needed
- Support digital initiatives (social media, online exhibits, in-house displays)
- Ensure proper preservation, storage, and labeling of artifacts
- Welcome visitors and provide exhibit interpretation and research assistance
- Support educational programming, events, and outreach activities
- Conduct research on regional sports history and notable figures
- Respond to public and research inquiries
- Assist with exhibit development and installation
- Contribute to website and social media content
- Supervise volunteers when required
- Provide general administrative and operational support
Qualifications & Skills
- Degree or diploma in museum studies, history, education, library science, journalism, kinesiology, sports management, or related field
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of collections management, research methods, and exhibit preparation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Assets (Preferred but Not Required)
- Knowledge of Northwestern Ontario history
- Interest in sports and heritage
- Experience in a museum, gallery, or cultural environment
- Familiarity with PastPerfect, Adobe Creative Suite, or website platforms (e.g., Wix)
