About the Opportunity

The Foundation is seeking an experienced financial leader to serve as Treasurer and join its volunteer Board of Directors. The Treasurer will provide financial oversight and stewardship, support strong governance and regulatory compliance, and help the Board make informed strategic decisions.

This is an opportunity to contribute financial leadership and governance expertise during one of the most important periods in the Foundation’s history. As it builds toward the centenary of the Persons Case in 2029, the Treasurer will play a key role in strengthening the organization’s financial sustainability and positioning it for meaningful, long-term national impact.

Key Responsibilities

The Treasurer provides financial leadership and governance oversight to the Board of Directors and works collaboratively with the Board Chair, Interim Leadership Team, bookkeeper, Finance Committee (when established), and external advisors.

Key responsibilities include:

• Champion the Foundation's vision, mission, and values, and fulfill the fiduciary responsibilities of a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer.
• Provide strategic financial leadership and advice to the Board, including oversight of the Foundation's financial sustainability and long-term financial planning.
• Exercise sound fiduciary oversight and uphold the highest standards of ethical governance.
• Lead the development of the annual operating budget and financial plan for Board approval, and monitor financial performance throughout the year.
• Oversee financial reporting, accounting processes, banking, investments, and internal financial controls in collaboration with the Foundation's bookkeeper and external advisors.
• Ensure the Foundation meets all financial, regulatory, and charitable reporting requirements, including annual financial statements, GST filings, CRA charitable reporting, and audit requirements.
• Review and provide financial oversight of significant contracts, grant agreements, sponsorship initiatives, and major projects as appropriate.
• Present regular financial reports and recommendations to the Board to support effective governance and decision-making.
• Serve as an authorized signing officer of the Foundation.
• Chair the Finance Committee, when established, and support the continued strengthening of the Foundation's financial governance practices.

Time Commitment

• Monthly Board meetings (typically held on the third Wednesday evening of each month).
• Periodic Finance Committee meetings, as required.
• Approximately 8–12 hours per month, with additional time during budget preparation, year-end financial reporting, and the annual audit.
• Attendance at the Foundation's Annual General Meeting and occasional Foundation events is expected.

Term

• 3 year term as a Director and Treasurer, renewable in accordance with the Foundation's governance policies.

Other Board Responsibilities

As a member of the Board of Directors, the Treasurer is expected to:

• Contribute to the strategic direction and governance of the Foundation, ensuring decisions align with its vision, mission, and values.
• Serve as an ambassador for the Foundation by promoting its mission, building relationships, and supporting fundraising and partnership development.
• Remain informed about emerging trends, risks, and opportunities affecting the charitable and nonprofit sector.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will bring:

• A professional accounting designation (CPA) or equivalent senior financial leadership experience.
• Experience in financial management, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
• An understanding of governance, fiduciary responsibilities, and the role of a Board Treasurer.
• Experience in the charitable or nonprofit sector is an asset.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• The ability to provide strategic financial advice while working collaboratively with a volunteer Board and senior leadership.
• A commitment to advancing opportunities for women and girls and enthusiasm for the Foundation's mission and values.
• Experience supporting organizational growth, fundraising, or strategic initiatives would be considered an asset.

Our preference is for applicants residing in or near the Calgary region, as the Treasurer serves as a signing officer and participates in occasional in-person meetings. However, we are open to applicants from across Canada.
