The Opportunity
As AVP, Casualty Corporate Risk, you will lead the strategy, profitability, and market presence of Aviva Canada’s Corporate Casualty portfolio within Global Corporate & Specialty—driving disciplined growth, strong broker partnerships, and a high‑performing underwriting team.
You will own the underwriting strategy for this segment, ensure strong technical and professional standards, and provide visible leadership to attract, develop, and retain top underwriting talent. This role offers meaningful exposure to enterprise strategy, senior executive partnerships, and Aviva’s multinational network, positioning you as a key leader within the organization and the broader market.
What you’ll do
Strategy & Business Leadership
- Lead the Casualty portfolio P&L, including the development and execution of the GCS Casualty strategy.
- Shape and execute underwriting strategies that deliver profitable growth while balancing market opportunity, risk appetite, and capital efficiency.
- Participate in and lead the development and presentation of compelling business proposals to prospective customers and broker partners.
- Monitor, analyze, and evaluate portfolio performance, identifying trends and developing underwriting and portfolio action plans to improve results.
- Leverage Aviva’s multinational network and strategic partners to grow Aviva Canada’s multinational Casualty proposition.
- Act as the primary Casualty market leader, building and strengthening relationships with brokers, clients, and key industry stakeholders.
- Provide expert counsel and partnership to senior internal stakeholders, including Distribution, Claims, Finance, Risk, and Legal.
Customer & Culture
- Actively influence and model Aviva’s customer culture through your leadership behaviors and decision‑making.
- Clearly articulate what customer‑centricity means within Corporate Casualty and how it is embedded in underwriting, service, and relationship management.
- Ensure fair treatment of customers is consistently defined, understood, and embedded within all underwriting and portfolio management activities.
- Partner with distribution and underwriting teams to deliver a strong, differentiated broker and client experience.
Risk & Governance
- Champion effective, embedded risk management as a core leadership responsibility.
- Foster a strong risk culture aligned with Aviva’s values, risk appetite, and regulatory expectations.
- Lead the application of the Group Risk Management Framework, including adherence to all relevant risk policies, business standards, reporting, escalation, and governance processes.
- Maintain effective risk management and internal control systems in line with agreed risk appetite, identifying gaps and driving timely remediation where required.
- Consider key risks and risk appetite in all strategic and operational decisions to ensure sustainable growth and resilience.
- Oversee risk considerations related to third‑party and outsourced arrangements where applicable.
People Leadership
- Recruit, develop, and retain a high‑performing team of Casualty underwriting professionals.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance management to build technical excellence, sound judgment, and leadership depth.
- Create an environment that motivates teams, fosters accountability, and encourages collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Generate energy, confidence, and alignment across the Casualty team to achieve business goals.
What you’ll bring
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.
- CIP designation or equivalent professional qualification.
- 10+ years of experience in commercial casualty underwriting, including large commercial risks.
- Experience with multinational insurance programs is a strong asset.
- Established credibility as an industry specialist with brokers, clients, peers, and industry associations.
- Demonstrated strategic leadership capability, with the ability to translate strategy into execution and results.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex underwriting and risk concepts to diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to influence, build relationships, and position Aviva effectively with prospects and market partners.
- Track record of building, leading, and sustaining high‑performing teams.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to balance quantitative analysis with market and competitor insights.
- High standards of integrity, humility, and professionalism, with a strong commitment to doing what is right.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with senior executives and cross‑functional partners to deliver enterprise‑wide objectives.
- Versatility in thinking and the ability to prioritize, synthesize information, and make sound decisions in a complex environment.
