Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING

• A library technician’s diploma is required.
• A university education in a related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE

• Experience with an Integrated Library System is required.
• Three years of related academic library experience and/or training is required.
• Detailed knowledge of library concepts and procedures required.
• Experience providing circulation and library reference to patrons, preferably in an academic library setting is required.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• The ability to provide a high level of customer service to faculty, staff, students and the general public is required.
• Strong organizational skills including the ability to work effectively and accurately in peak periods are required.
• Demonstrated ability to show good judgment is required.
• Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and adapt to change is required.
• Keyboarding skills and demonstrated proficiency in using intermediate features associated with Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook) required.
• Ability to conduct effective patron reference interviews is required.
• Demonstrated ability to learn and apply automated and manual procedures is required.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team is required.
• Ability to work in harmony with others is required.
• Demonstrated initiative and ability to be proactive required.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English and to accurately follow both written and verbal English direction is required.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS

• Satisfactory work record including attendance and punctuality is required.
• Physically capable of performing the duties as assigned which may include moderate to heavy lifting.
• May be required to work in multiple locations.

Key responsibilities

• Provides informational and reference services to UML patrons through a variety of mediums including in-person, telephone, email and synchronous online/virtual, referring, as needed, to the appropriate liaison librarian.
• Provides direction and instruction in the access to and use of all types of library collections including print and electronic resources, keeping up-to-date on print and electronic services/resources available.
• Supports the Libraries’ activities and projects related to the preparation of learning and instructional support initiatives including assisting with registrations, preparing and printing materials for sessions, collecting and organizing feedback.
• Supports the Libraries’ activities and projects related to promotion and implementation of programs and services which promote and increase awareness of scholarly communication including preparing subject and repository specific material.
• Provides library tours and orientations to individuals or groups.
• Promotes library resources and services to patrons including informing patrons of new services and resources available.
• Provides all aspects of circulation services to UML patrons as set out in the Libraries’ Circulation Procedures Manual.
• Monitors library and computer equipment in public services areas, assists patrons with use, and handles minor equipment problems. Troubleshoots problems and refers to IST when necessary.
• Collects library activity statistics.
• Supports Functional team as required.
• Provides backup for LA4’s during absences.
• Helps to maintain the physical appearance of the library.
• Serves on library committees as appointed or elected.
• Other duties as assigned.
