Laboratory Assistant - Microbiology

Your Opportunity: The Laboratory Assistant II in the Microbiology department at Edmonton Base Lab offers an exciting opportunity for providing technical expertise, coaching, and supervision to the Microbiology pre-analytics team. The Laboratory Assistant II role ensures workflow processes and procedures are meeting operational requirements while also applying quality standards to all procedures and processes to maintain high quality patient care. The Laboratory Assistant II has in-depth in problem solving skills and investigation of quality control issues, assisting with general departmental operations, reviewing, revising, and is instrumental in developing specific processes, procedures, and reference information including development of training and competency documents. Other duties include project implementation, scheduling and reassignment of staff resources, training of staff and students, responding to inquiries, cleaning, monitoring and preventative maintenance of lab equipment and work areas, maintaining common supplies, updating inventories and data sheets and participating in lab quality and safety reviews.
Description:
As a Laboratory Assistant II, you will perform advanced preanalytical or analytical techniques on specimen/samples or coordinate, prioritize, monitor, and assign duties of laboratory staff in your assigned area. You will resolve escalated issues, conduct quality control investigations and maintain technical and operational procedures. You will be responsible for ensuring laboratory staff maintain compliance with policies and procedures and will provide coaching and feedback to staff and students.

Required Qualifications: Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program.
Additional Required Qualifications: Completion of a Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate from a Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Sciences (CSMLS) accredited program. Minimum two years' experience in a microbiology laboratory. Excellent comprehension, written and communication skills. Demonstrated professionalism within a laboratory setting. Strong commitment to customer service. Excellent planning and organization skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask. Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail. Proven ability to work independently as well as in a team contributing to and promoting a positive work environment. Flexible with the ability to work within an environment of change. Demonstrated understanding of a philosophy of quality systems improvement. Equivalent qualifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous leadership experience is an asset. Proven experience with the RLS system. Previous document management experience in a laboratory setting. Proficiency in Epic Beaker and Microsoft applications. Problem bench experience in microbiology at Edmonton Base Lab is an asset.
