Research Manager ( Remote)

This position supports the day-to-day operations of a portfolio of research projects led by Dr. Aislin Mushquash, with a focus on Digital Mental Health and Youth Mental Health initiatives at Lakehead University. Mushquash and the research team, the role coordinates research project activities, timelines, and resources, and provides administrative, financial, and human resource support to ensure projects are implemented in accordance with approved protocols and funding requirements. The position contributes to project planning, budget monitoring, stakeholder coordination, and research reporting, supporting the successful delivery of research objectives from funding application through to dissemination. Research Program Management
Oversee and manage multiple research projects within Dr. Mushquash's research portfolio.
Lead financial management of all grants awarded to the PI, ensuring effective budgeting and monitoring across diverse funding sources.
Track and report on project progress, including financial and operational metrics, in collaboration with Lakehead Research and Trust Accounting.
Manage project timelines, resources, risks, and impacts, ensuring the successful delivery of research outputs and outcomes.
Identify and pursue relevant funding opportunities to expand the research portfolio, contributing to grant applications with guidelines and budget estimates.
Foster relationships with research teams and internal/external stakeholders to ensure smooth project operations.
Act as the point of contact for inquiries related to the PI’s research, including communications from potential students, trainees, partners, and funders.
Assist with planning and executing in-person events, workshops, and meetings, representing the PI’s research programs.
Promote knowledge-sharing within research teams to enhance collaboration and project success.
Research Program Leadership, Implementation, and Evaluation:
Coordinate and manage tasks within the research program, ensuring flexibility to meet evolving priorities and demands.
Support the PI in delivering research projects, ensuring timely updates on priorities, resources, and progress.
Assist with the preparation of research ethics applications and the development of study tools, including consent forms, interview guides, and survey questionnaires.
Conduct systematic literature reviews and environmental scans to inform research decisions.
Develop data collection instruments and manage their implementation for multiple research projects.
Address any challenges that arise during research implementation, consulting with the research team to resolve issues and maintain project timelines.
Stay current on relevant research trends and literature, ensuring alignment with best practices.
Research Analysis, Reporting, and Dissemination:
Serve as a resource for data collection, analysis, and interpretation, providing guidance to the PI and research teams on methods and data quality.
Design protocols for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods data collection, ensuring alignment with research objectives.
Provide expertise in qualitative data analysis using NVivo software and quantitative analysis using tools such as R or SPSS.
Oversee the preparation of data summaries, including tables, charts, and infographics, to present research findings.
Collaborate with investigators and partners to create dissemination materials such as reports, presentations, and visual summaries.
Assist in the preparation of manuscripts, offering editing and guidance to ensure publication quality.
Support the organization of knowledge translation events, including public meetings, webinars, and media outreach.
Identify opportunities to present research at conferences and professional events to further disseminate findings.
Research Staff, Student, and Trainee Management:
Manage research personnel, collaborating with Lakehead University Human Resources for recruitment, onboarding, training, andevaluation.
Provide orientation and ongoing mentorship to new staff and trainees.
Supervise 5-7 direct reports, including research coordinators, assistants, students, and volunteers.
Serve as the primary point of contact for prospective students, staff, and trainees.
In collaboration with the supervisor and research team members, manages and coordinates the day-to-day operations of assigned research projects to ensure activities are completed in accordance with approved protocols, timelines, and funding requirements.
Applies established research administration and project management practices to support planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting activities across multiple research initiatives.
Provides administrative, financial, and operational coordination support for research projects, including assisting with budget monitoring, resource tracking, and compliance with university and sponsor guidelines.
Exercises independent judgment within established project plans and policies to prioritize tasks, coordinate workflows, and address operational issues, escalating matters as appropriate to the Principal Investigator.
Liaises with internal and external stakeholders to support effective communication, coordination, and collaboration related to research activities.
Supports the coordination of research personnel by assisting with recruitment, onboarding, training, and workflow management on behalf of the supervisor.
Receives general direction from the supervisor, with accountability for ensuring assigned research activities and deliverables as planned.
Master’s degree in a relevant field of study
A minimum of 10 years of research experience, which may include a combination of training and employment.
Demonstrated experience in managing multiple, complex budgets, including analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
Proven experience in supervising students, trainees, and research staff in a collaborative environment.
Significant experience conducting systematic reviews, environmental scans, and research methodologies, including interviews, focus groups, surveys, chart reviews, and program evaluations.
Expertise in preparing funding applications, implementing research initiatives, and reporting to funding agencies.
Extensive experience in managing and implementing research projects, ensuring that all deliverables are met on time and within scope.
Advanced understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods, with the ability to advise on and conduct data analysis usingsoftware such as SPSS, R, and NVivo.
Familiarity with northern urban, rural, and remote communities, with a strong understanding of Indigenous, Francophone, andimmigrant populations; In-depth knowledge of research ethics and the ability to prepare and submit research ethics applications and tools (e.g., Comprehensive understanding of project advisory group dynamics, including collaboration with stakeholders, community partners, service providers, youth, families/caregivers, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers.
Experience in coordinating research staff and ensuring smooth execution of projects through effective leadership and team collaboration.
Exceptional administrative, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines efficiently.
Proven ability to manage confidential information with discretion and respect for privacy, especially in sensitive contexts such as dealing with research participants, clients, and trainees.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Suite, and analytical software (e.g., SPSS, R, NVivo) for research analysis and data management.
Ability to supervise a team of 5-7 direct reports, providing mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities.
Research Dissemination:
Expertise in drafting and reviewing manuscripts, preparing technical reports, and creating visual deliverables (e.g., PhD in a relevant field of study
