Summary Of Duties

Reports to the Superintendent, Fleet Service Garages, or designate. Provides non-technical shop, yards, stores, cleaning, parts, equipment movement, minor repair, and administrative support to Fleet Services garage operations. Maintains, moves, receives, stores and issues shop supplies and materials; assists licensed tradespersons with non-technical tasks; supports shop housekeeping, safety, environmental handling, tool control and inventory processes; and performs related duties as assigned.

GENERAL DUTIES

Shop, Yard and Facility Support

Cleans, sweeps, washes and maintains shop floors, service bays, offices, lunchrooms, washrooms, parts/storage areas, yards and surrounding areas at the Central Garage and satellite garage locations.

Maintains safe access through shop and yard areas, including clearing pathways, entrances, exits and work areas of snow, ice, dirt, debris, spills and other hazards.

Performs general housekeeping and organization of shop tools, equipment, supplies, parts, storage areas, bulk-fluid areas and work areas to support safe and efficient garage operations.

Maintains cleaning supplies and consumables, identifies low stock levels, and reports replenishment needs to the supervisor, designate, or inventory/parts staff.

Locks and secures shops, vehicles, equipment, gates, storage areas and assigned facilities as directed.

Assistance to Tradespersons and Garage Operations

Assists licensed mechanics, technicians, welders and other tradespersons with non-technical duties, including positioning, holding, moving, cleaning, staging, preparing and organizing parts, tools, materials and equipment.

Performs simple welding, cutting, bending, grinding, drilling, shaping and material preparation when assigned and where competent and trained to do so.

Removes and installs non-diagnostic or non-certification related components and accessories under direction, such as tailgates, plough assemblies, blades, guards, brackets, covers, panels, mirrors, wipers, lights or similar components, provided the work does not require trade certification or statutory inspection sign-off.

Assists with basic servicing tasks under direction, such as replenishing approved fluids, lubricants and shop consumables, and supporting preventative maintenance preparation where trained and authorized.

Assists with wheel, rim, tire, attachment or accessory handling and movement where appropriately trained and under the direction of qualified staff.

Steam cleans, pressure washes and washes packers, engines, undercarriages, equipment, attachments, shop equipment and components as directed.

Minor Repairs, Tools and Equipment

Performs minor repairs to buildings, appliances, tools and equipment, such as replacing light bulbs, cords, plugs, hoses, handles, guards or other minor components where permitted, trained and safe to do so.

Operates shop and power tools and equipment such as floor polishers, grinders, drills, saws, pressure washers, steam cleaners and other tools within training and safe operating limits.

Operates overhead cranes, hoists, mobile lifting devices, front-end loaders, forklifts and other yard/shop equipment where trained, certified, authorized and required.

Inspects assigned tools and shop equipment for visible defects, removes unsafe items from service where appropriate, and reports defects, damage or missing items to the supervisor or designate.

Assists with organizing tool rooms, shared tool boards, special tools, shop equipment, cords, hoses, lifting accessories and storage locations.

Parts, Stores, Materials and Inventory Support

Drives City vehicles to pick up, deliver, load and unload parts, tools, supplies, fluids, equipment, documents, uniforms and other materials between vendors, City locations and Fleet garages.

Receives, moves, stores, issues and stages materials and supplies such as antifreeze, oil, lubricants, filters, cleaning products, spill supplies, fasteners, shop consumables and other garage materials.

Assists with parts and supply inventory counts, cycle counts, annual counts and reconciliation activities, including locating, counting, labelling, organizing and recording parts, tools, consumables and materials.

Assists with maintaining parts-room, tool-room and storage-area organization, including bin labelling, shelf organization, stock rotation, segregation of obsolete material and identification of damaged or unusable stock.

Updates or assists with updating basic inventory records, parts counts, tool lists, sign-out sheets, stock sheets, spreadsheets, work management systems or other Fleet records as directed.

Reports low stock, unusual usage, missing tools, damaged tools, expired products, obsolete parts, inventory discrepancies and storage concerns to the supervisor, designate, parts staff or inventory lead.

Assists with maintaining records for materials used, labour, supplies moved, fuel or fluid levels, dip tanks, bulk products, shop consumables, PPE, coveralls and other assigned tracking documents.

Environmental, Waste and Safety Support

Monitors and reports on assigned fuel, bulk fluid, waste-oil, dip-tank or other shop supply levels as directed.

Separates, collects, stores and transports scrap and waste materials such as batteries, waste oil, used filters, fluids, metal, cardboard, garbage, recyclables and hazardous or controlled waste in accordance with City procedures and applicable legislation.

Maintains spill kits and assists with spill response, containment and cleanup within training and safe work procedures.

Handles, stores and transports shop chemicals, fluids and controlled products in accordance with WHMIS, safety data sheets, City procedures and environmental requirements.

Identifies and reports safety hazards, defective equipment, housekeeping concerns, blocked exits, spills, unsecured materials, damaged storage, missing labels or other unsafe conditions.

Clothing, PPE and Laundry Support

Counts, sorts, records, stores and distributes coveralls, shop clothing, laundering items and related uniform/PPE items for cleaning service or internal distribution.

Assists with maintaining assigned PPE, clothing, laundering and safety-supply records, and reports shortages or service issues.

Administrative and Record-Keeping Support

Completes or assists with basic records of materials used, labour performed, inventory counts, parts movement, supply usage, deliveries, pickups, cleaning activities, waste handling and other assigned shop records.

Uses basic computer, tablet, barcode, spreadsheet, email or work-management tools where assigned and trained to support shop records, inventory, parts and tool tracking.

Assists supervisors, VSCs, parts staff and tradespersons by locating information, confirming counts, preparing simple lists, staging parts, filing records and communicating basic status updates related to assigned tasks.

Maintains confidentiality and accuracy of operational records and escalates discrepancies or incomplete information for review.

Oversee the process of managing obsolete goods by identifying, documenting, and coordinating their disposal, including completing the required surplus and obsolete goods disposal request form.

Other Duties

Performs all work in accordance with City policies, safe work procedures, applicable legislation, environmental requirements and supervisor direction.

Works at Central Garage and satellite garage/divisional locations as operationally required.

Performs other related duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the position.

Qualifications

• Previous experience related to shop, garage, yard, stores, maintenance, minor repair, cleaning, parts handling, inventory support or comparable work, normally acquired through a combination of education and related work experience.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and perform a variety of tasks safely and accurately, including operating vehicles, handling supplies, assisting tradespersons and performing simple shop-support duties.
• Ability to perform janitorial, material-handling, shop-support and minor-repair duties, including carrying, lifting, loading, unloading, moving and storing supplies and materials used in Fleet operations.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” driver’s licence, with preference for Class “D” with “Z” endorsement.
• Proof of valid Class “G” or “DZ” licence is required after hire, as applicable to City policy.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Lift Truck Operator certificate and any other required equipment, safety or internal training certifications.
• Basic computer, record-keeping and arithmetic skills sufficient to assist with shop records, inventory counts, parts/supply lists, tool tracking and related administrative duties.
• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, WHMIS, safe material handling, spill response, environmental handling of waste products, and applicable Fleet Services safe work procedures.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, communicate effectively with supervisors, tradespersons, parts/inventory staff and internal customers, and maintain a safe, clean and organized shop environment.

Salary Grade D

40 per week
