ABOUT OUR FAMILY

We’re a Swedish-Canadian-American family living in Ottawa (Carlingwood/Westboro) with our two kids, Oskar (7) and Astrid (5). We value clear communication, respect your time, and aim to plan ahead as much as possible. Our home is lively, playful, and full of imagination — lots of creative play, dance parties, fort building, and outdoor fun.

SCHEDULE (OCCASIONAL / FLEXIBLE HOURS)

We’re mainly looking for occasional help, most often weekend date nights (a few hours in the evening). From time to time, we may also need help with school pickup, PD days, or staying home with one child if they’re sick. Occasionally, there could be longer stretches of help (a few hours during the day or evening), especially when my husband is traveling for work and I’m solo parenting. During those times, I might need support with things like pickup, homework, or dinner. There may also be the possibility of overnight care for a short trip, but that would always be planned well in advance. Overall, this would not be a regular set schedule, but if it’s a good fit, it would become consistent, ongoing monthly help.

• Confident with high-energy kids (ADHD experience is a plus)
• Proactive, playful, and genuinely engaging — not passive
• Comfortable taking the lead and including both kids in activities
• Comes prepared with ideas and a plan for how to engage the kids
• Reliable, communicative, and dependable

It’s important for us to say that we’re not just looking for someone who is “sweet.” Our kids need someone who is confident, proactive, and naturally playful — someone who brings ideas, energy, and creativity, and truly enjoys engaging with kids. Arriving with a plan for what you’ll do together (games, activities, etc.) makes a big difference for our kids and helps everything run more smoothly. Passive babysitting (TV, phones, or letting kids drift into separate activities) doesn’t work well for our family. Both kids need to feel included, supported, and part of what’s happening.

ABOUT THE CHILDREN

Oskar has ADHD and is an incredibly sensitive, thoughtful boy with the biggest heart. He’s fun, imaginative, and very loving, and he especially enjoys biking, playing with Hot Wheels, board games, LEGO, and video games. He can sometimes withdraw if he feels left out or if attention shifts mainly to his younger sister. In the past, sitters have thought they were giving him “space,” but what he actually needs is gentle encouragement to stay involved and included. If he removes himself to watch TV or play video games, that’s usually a sign he’s feeling left out — and we would want a sitter who notices that and helps bring him back into the activity. The best way to connect with Oskar is to actively invite him into play, give him a role or “job,” and tap into his interests. He really thrives when he feels helpful or gets to take the lead — he naturally steps into that and honestly has future project manager energy. Once he feels included and seen, he opens up quickly and is incredibly fun and engaging to be around. Astrid is outgoing, energetic, and very social. She loves being around people, talking, playing, and getting fully immersed in whatever is happening. She thrives on interaction and connection, and she’ll happily pull you into games, pretend play, or a dance party. She’s very expressive and confident, but still little, so she benefits from structure and gentle guidance. Because she naturally draws attention, it’s important to us that a sitter is mindful of balancing both kids’ needs so that Oskar also feels included and seen.
