Position: Family Practitioner – Cowichan Urgent and Primary Care Centre (Clinic)

Role and Facility Information:

The Cowichan PCN is hiring Family Practitioners for a new medical clinic opening soon in Cowichan. You will work alongside other Family Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Social Workers, Mental Health workers and Medical Office Assistants in a collaborative and supportive clinic environment to deliver comprehensive care to patients across the lifespan, from newborns to seniors, focusing on building lasting relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

• Comprehensive Patient Care: Diagnose, treat and manage acute and chronic health conditions for patients of all ages, including preventive care, health screening, vaccinations and minor procedures.
• Chronic Disease Management: Oversee long‑term conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma and cardiovascular disease.
• Women’s Health & Mental Health: Provide care for women’s health needs (Pap smears, contraception) and offer mental health support (anxiety, depression).
• Telehealth & In‑Person Appointments: Deliver both in‑person and telehealth services, documenting care in the Telus Med Access EMR system.
• Pre‑booked & Same‑Day Access Appointments: Provide pre‑booked and same‑day appointments to ensure timely care and flexibility.

Qualifications, Education and Skills:

• Current College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) licence (Provisional)
• Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP) eligibility (Mandatory)
• Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) membership (Mandatory)

Compensation:

Clinical Service Contract

Benefits and Incentives (Rural Subsidiary Agreement – RSA):

• Recruitment Incentive: Up to $10,000 (pro‑rated based on FTE)
• Relocation Funding: Up to $15,000 (amount based on location relocating from)
• Retention Premium: 4.2%
• Retention Flat Fee: $6,508.80
• Continuing Medical Education (CME) Support: $2,200 per annum for years 3‑4; $4,400 per annum after 4 years in the community

All amounts are current as of December 2024 and may be subject to change.

Location:

Cowichan – population approximately 84,000, including Ladysmith, Chemainus, Crofton, Duncan, Cowichan Lake, Maple Bay, Cowichan Bay, Mill Bay, Shawnigan Lake and Cobble Hill.

Cowichan is a warm and welcoming small‑town with excellent public schools, recreational opportunities, and proximity to Victoria (45 min), Nanaimo (40 min) and Mount Washington (2 h). It is served by Island Health’s 148‑bed Cowichan District Hospital, with a new 204‑bed facility scheduled to open in 2027.
