Position Overview and Responsibilities

The Social Development Director will play a pivotal role in advancing the social well-being and empowerment of the community members within Whitefish Lake First Nation # 128. Reporting to the Band Manager, the Social Development Director will oversee and implement various programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life, cultural preservation, and socio-economic growth of the First Nation's population. The Whitefish Lake First Nation # 128 will establish a “people-oriented” approach, strive to provide members with a wide range of welfare services, including income assistance, services for the elderly, case management and related support services. The Director of Social Development will forge partnerships with businesses and governments, including local governments to provide a range of social services including access to training and employment opportunities.

As the Social Development Director, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the WFL # 128 Social Development department. Your main responsibilities will include:

· Develop, implement, and manage social development programs that address the special requirements and ambitions of the Whitefish Lake First Nation # 128 community.

· Determine and monitor Social Assistance eligibility upon application, monthly, and yearly, while maintaining absolute confidentiality

· Build strong community ties and serve as a link between community members and social development programs.

· Act as the ambassador for the social development interests of the First Nation in external forums, meetings, and partnerships

· Collaborate with relevant departments and external partners to ensure program alignment and resources are effectively coordinated.

· Create and direct projects that promote youth and family well-being, education, and positive development.

· Oversees the administration of the department's yearly budgets for social development, income assistance, recreation, social development, youth, and families.

· Manage, mentor, and supervise staff and volunteer students

· Prepare and distribute monthly Social Assistance payments and Special Needs requests as needed

· Collaborate closely with cultural elders, leaders, and traditional knowledge keepers to incorporate cultural history and customs into social development projects.

· Work with schools, organizations, and government agencies to provide youth development resources and opportunities.

· Prepares funding proposals in education, recreation, social development, income support, family violence prevention, restorative justice, and community-based activities.

· Monitor program effectiveness, gather feedback, and make data-driven improvements.

· Identify and implement strategies to enhance economic self-sufficiency and employment opportunities for community members who are on welfare

· Advocate for policies and resources that address the social and economic needs of the community.

· Ensuring compliance with regulations, licensing requirements, and the Social Development policies and procedures manual

· Develop and manage budgets for social development programs, ensuring responsible allocation of resources.

· Ensures that programs and services adhere to Whitefish Lake First Nation # 128 financial practices and administrative policies and legislative and funding agreement requirements

· Prepare regular reports and presentations for leadership, detailing program progress, outcomes, and challenges.

· Any other task assigned by the supervisor;

Qualifications

· Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work, Indigenous Studies, Community Development, or a related field. Combination of experience, education will be considered

· Knowledge and an understanding of Income Assistance or Social Assistance Programs, basic accounting processes, and understanding of financial practices and administrative policies

· 3 to 5 years of experience in program management, community engagement, and Indigenous-focused initiatives.

· Strong communication skills and proficiency in MS Office

· A good knowledge of the Whitefish Lake First Nation's # 128 culture, history, traditions, values, beliefs, diversities and language

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with diverse community members.

· Ability to work in a team environment as well as work independently and Strong organizational, program development and management skills;

· Satisfactory Driver's Abstract, Criminal Record and Child Intervention Check.

· MUST have a valid class 5 driver's license along with a reliable vehicle;

· MUST be able to maintain confidentiality;
