Facilities Assistant

Zaber is looking for a personable and organized Facilities Assistant with a passion for troubleshooting and fixing things to join our Facilities and Office Management Team. Your day-to-day work will be hands-on and varied: one morning you could be setting up a workstation or coordinating with an outside maintenance vendor, and in the afternoon you could be replacing a door closer or assisting a Facilities Technician with a new compressed-air line.
You'll join our Facilities and Office Team, working alongside an Office Manager and three experienced Facilities Technicians. The team supports ~200 employees across 5 buildings, and 70,000 square feet. Our space includes a 12,000-square-foot machine shop and a production floor staffed by 30 technicians. Much of your work will come through emails and Facilities tickets, but you'll also respond to immediate requests and day-to-day needs as they arise.
Zaber is an employee-owned company that designs and manufactures precision motion control equipment for customers in photonics, life sciences, and industrial automation. We build our products in Vancouver, and your role is crucial to creating a well-run facility that makes that possible.
As a Facilities Assistant, you will:
- Work from a ticketing system to log and address maintenance requests, and respond to immediate needs as they come up: fixing a light, clearing a blocked drain, or investigating an issue.
- Coordinate with vendors to arrange planned maintenance and explain required work onsite.
- Support team moves and expansion projects, coordinate regularly with the Office Manager, IT, and Receiving teams.
- Support Facilities Technicians on larger projects and develop a working knowledge of the equipment in our base building systems, machine shop, and production floor.
- Keep facilities documentation, tools, and supplies organized and stocked.
- Communicate clearly with staff across every team about what you are working on and when things will be resolved.
You're the ideal Facilities Assistant if you have:
- Strong familiarity with handtools, basic repair work, and the ability to use email, calendar, and other basic desktop applications.
- Comfort working at heights up to 10 metres and the ability to lift and carry up to 25 kg.
- A proactive approach to safety, where you're comfortable sharing concerns, assessing new tasks for risks, and asking for help to create a safer work environment.
- Clear communication skills and the confidence to work in a technically minded environment.
- Genuine empathy, strong active listening and insightful questioning skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks by their impact on other teams.
- An aptitude for troubleshooting and investigating new or unusual maintenance issues, with the ability to work from a task queue while staying comfortable with unplanned, immediate requests.
Facilities Assistant Details:
- The starting wage for this role is $24 - $32/hour, depending on experience.
- Type: Full-time, Permanent.
- Schedule: Shifts until 6 pm; one or two weekend days per month.
