Role Summary

The Specialist, Communications (Media, Projects & Delivery)supports the development and delivery of Travel Alberta’s corporate communications and media relations activities. Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Communications & Content, this role works collaboratively with internal teams to develop clear, consistent, and brand-aligned communications materials and support the execution of communications initiatives. 

The Specialist contributes to the creation of a variety of communications products, including presentations, briefing notes, reports, and media materials. They support the coordination and delivery of communications projects and assist in ensuring materials are accurate, timely, and tailored to intended audiences. 

This role also provides support for corporate media relations and public relations (MRPR) activities with a focus on regional and business media, including the development of media materials, monitoring media coverage, and maintaining media lists. The Specialist helps ensure alignment with Travel Alberta’s brand and messaging across all communications outputs. 

The role requires strong writing, organization, and coordination skills, along with the ability to manage multiple priorities and contribute to team deliverables in a fast-paced environment. 

Key Responsibilities

1. Communication and Corporate Strategy: 

• Drafts and supports the development of communications materials including presentations, briefing notes, reports, key messages, and supporting documentation. 

• Assists business units with developing clear and consistent messaging aligned with Travel Alberta’s brand and communications standards. 

• Adapts content for different audiences, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and consistency across materials. 

• Develops, leads, and implements communications plans and strategies, working independently and in collaboration with the Manager and senior leadership to support planning and delivery. 

• Assists in the preparation of issues management and reactive communications materials as required. 

• Conducts research and gathers information to support the development of communications products. 

• Prepares correspondence, summaries, and documentation in response to internal requests. 

• Supports issues monitoring and response, providing strategic guidance and advice to teams across the organization in alignment with communications best practice and Travel Alberta standards.

• Works closely with Travel Alberta’s destination and commercial development team to support community outreach activities and identify storytelling opportunities.

• Reviews materials for accuracy, grammar, and alignment with brand guidelines. 

• Collaborates with team members to support consistent messaging across communications deliverables. 

• Contributes to the development of clear and well-structured materials by identifying gaps and seeking clarification when needed. 

2. Project Management and Delivery: 

• Supports the coordination and delivery of communications projects, ensuring tasks and timelines are tracked and met. 

• Assists in developing project plans, schedules, and tracking tools for communications initiatives. 

• Coordinates inputs from internal teams to support the development of communications deliverables. 

• Monitors progress of assigned tasks and escalates risks or delays to the Manager as needed. 

• Ensures communications materials meet established quality and brand standards. 

• Manages multiple assignments simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and deadlines. 

• Builds trusted relationships with cross-functional teams, senior leaders, and external partners through professional, responsive communication. Navigates complex stakeholder relationships with confidence, adapting communication style to diverse audiences and seniority levels. 

• Drives alignment and buy-in across teams to drive progress on shared priorities.

• Identifies opportunities to improve coordination and workflow within communications projects. 

• Supports basic tracking and reporting on communications activities and outputs. 

3. Corporate Media Relations and Public Relations (MRPR): 

• Supports the development of media materials including media releases, backgrounders, fact sheets, and key messages. 

• Works alongside the Manager to equip senior leaders with the messaging, preparation, and confidence to show up credibly in any media environment. 

• Writes polished, publication-ready news releases and announcements with speed and accuracy, translating organizational news into stories that earn coverage. 

• Assists in maintaining and updating media lists and distribution tools. 

• Monitors media coverage and prepares regular summaries and reports for internal teams. 

• Drives successful media events and tours from concept to execution, maintaining rigorous attention to detail across timelines, logistics, and stakeholder coordination. 

• Supports media outreach activities, including pitching, coordinating distribution of materials and tracking responses. 

• Assists in preparing briefing materials and messaging for media interactions. 

• Works with internal teams to gather information required for media and public relations materials. 

• Ensures media materials align with Travel Alberta’s brand, tone, and messaging. 

• Supports the tracking and evaluation of media coverage and public relations activities. 

Required Qualifications

1. Education and Experience: 

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Business, or a related discipline. 

• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in communications, public relations, or a related role. 

• Experience supporting the development of communications materials and contributing to communications projects. 

• Exposure to media relations or public relations activities is considered an asset. 

• Existing media relationships across Alberta and Canada are considered an asset. 

• Experience working in a corporate or agency environment is preferred. 

• Professional designation (e.g., IABC, CPRS) is considered an asset. 

2. Technical Skills:  

• Demonstrates solid technical capability in developing, formatting, and producing communications materials using standard business and communications tools. 

• Applies working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel) to create clear, accurate, and well-structured documents and presentations. 

• Uses basic media and communications tools (e.g., media lists, monitoring platforms, content systems) to support communications and media relations activities. 

• Applies an understanding of brand standards to ensure consistency in formatting, tone, and presentation across materials. 

• Demonstrates the ability to organize and manage information, supporting the development of clear and structured communications outputs. 

• Works within established tools, templates, and processes to support efficient and consistent delivery of communications materials. 

3. Project Management Skills: 

• Demonstrates the ability to support the planning, coordination, and delivery of communications projects. 

• Assists in organizing tasks, timelines, and deliverables to ensure work is completed on schedule. 

• Tracks progress of assigned activities and provides updates to the Manager or project leads. 

• Coordinates inputs from multiple team members to support completion of communications deliverables. 

• Identifies potential delays or challenges and escalates appropriately. 

• Maintains organized documentation and follows established project management processes and tools. 

• Supports efficient workflow by managing priorities and adapting to changing timelines and requirements. 

4. Problem-Solving Abilities:

• Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments. 

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work. 

• Able to adapt to changing priorities and support team needs as required. 

• Proactive in tracking tasks, following up on deliverables, and meeting deadlines. 
• While the majority of this role’s duties will be conducted onsite within regular working hours, this role may be asked to support media hosting and events in other parts of the province a few times per year. A valid Alberta Driver’s License is required as is openness to occasional offsite work.
