Communications Coordinator, University Relations

Primary Purpose: The Communications Coordinator is a creative storyteller and content creator responsible for developing and implementing impactful communication materials that elevate the University of Saskatchewan’s reputation and priorities. This role focuses on producing engaging multimedia content—including video, photography, alt stories and social media assets—while supporting media communications. All work aligns with the University Relations strategic communications and social media plan.

The Communications Coordinator reports to the Communications Specialist on the central university communication unit. The incumbent is a member of the Office of the Vice-President University Relations.

Nature of Work: This position is ideal for someone who thrives on creating compelling content and bringing ideas to life across digital platforms. You will conceptualize, produce, and edit videos, capture photography, and craft stories that resonate with diverse audiences. The role also involves occasional media support, including drafting news stories and press releases. We are looking for someone who is flexible, able to get up to speed quickly, able to juggle multiple projects, effective at building relationships and working in a collaborative team environment. Consequence of error is significant to the reputation and profile of the university. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities

• Creation of a wide variety of digital communications pieces intended for social media, including short-form video, photo, etc.
• Creation of communications plans to support initiatives and events and then working with the team to implement those plans
• Providing communications support for various media relations, social media, internal communications initiatives, including communications planning, writing, web and social media content creation, etc.
• Create and collate a variety of digital content for numerous USask channels, including pulling together images, video, graphics and text as appropriate for the intended audience and the channel (working with a graphic designer).
• Provide logistical support for various projects, such as helping with the digital asset management system, manage communications requests, helping with photo shoots and video shoots, and others as required.
• Steward the USask brand and visual identity.
• Assist with other communications projects as required.

Education: An undergraduate university degree, preferably in communications, journalism, marketing or related field. Experience with photography or video would also be considered an asset. An equivalent level of education and experience may be considered.

Experience: One to three years of directly related experience in related areas of communications and marketing. Knowledge of the University of Saskatchewan, the academic environment and/or advancement would be an asset.

Skills

• Demonstrated communications skills and experience applying them in a complex environment, working with multiple stakeholders
• Experience with photography or video would be an asset
• Understanding of digital communications platforms, including social media (best practices and content creation) and web/graphic-based storytelling
• Strong writing skills and experience with developing a range of written content
• Experience creating and implementing communications plans
• Experience with marketing and ad copy writing is considered an asset
• Careful attention to detail and proofreading skills
• Ability to conceptualize and create content for a variety of channels, including web, video, social media, media, print, etc.
• Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills including tact, diplomacy, professionalism and ethical behavior
• Ability to deliver projects on time and on budget
