LOCATION
Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH is a vibrant community hospital delivering a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Directly serving a growing population of more than 60,000 residents spread across a mix of urban and rural settings, NHH directly employs approximately 750 people and relies on the additional support provided by a highly engaged and supportive network of physicians, midwives and volunteers.
Role Overview
The RPN role in the Emergency Department includes provision of direct nursing care to patients in consultation with the RN. The RPN reports any changes in patient conditions to the RN and may contribute to decisions regarding management of care. The RPN shares his/her knowledge and expertise with others and contributes to the advancement of nursing practice and excellence. The RPN continually enhances their practice and competencies through ongoing learning, evidence-based, culturally appropriate and patient-centered quality care in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario and Northumberland Hills Hospitals mission, vision and values. The RPN works in consultation and collaboration with RNs and other members of the inter-professional team to meet the care needs of the more complex clients and when necessary, safely transferring care to the Registered Nurse. The RPN optimizes the patient’s experience and care outcomes by being accountable for one’s decisions and professional practice, establishing a therapeutic relationship with the patient, providing autonomous nursing care with patients considered stable and with predictable outcomes and collaborating with other members of the patient’s care team.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Registered Practical Nursing diploma from a recognized Community College
- Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification required
- One-year recent emergency department or emergency urgent care experience (within the last three-years) required
- One-year medical/surgical experience required
- Competent in care of patients with basic orthopedic and integumentary emergencies
- Competent in application of basic orthopedic devices (crutches, casting, slings)
- Competent in IV insertions and phlebotomy
- Competent in cardiac monitoring-demonstrated ability to interpret cardiac rhythm strips (Tested)
- Coronary Care Course 1 required
- Experience with pediatric and adult advanced physical assessment
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education
- Excellent assessment skills including pediatric assessment
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills both written and verbal, and experience dealing with the public.
- EPIC ASAP experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of Northumberland Hills Hospital Mission, Vision, and Values
- Applicant has a demonstrated knowledge of ‘Person-and-family-centered’ model of care
- Acceptable attendance in current position
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to work in an active, rapidly changing, stressful environment with multiple demands
- Ability to make decisions and prioritize workload and demands effectively
- Ability to focus on complex instructions and tasks in an environment with many distractions
- Intense visual concentration required for processing practitioners’ orders, carrying out medication administration routines and interpreting electronic physiological monitoring equipment
- Physical ability to lift, pull, push, carry, reach, and physically support patients with assistance, as required.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time with repetitive bending
- Adheres to safe and healthy workplace practices and maintains a safe and healthy work environment through attendance at educational programs, use of established mechanisms for injuries and hazards, and adheres to health and safety related policies and procedures
Employment Requirements
Successful applicants are required to provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.
Additionally to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
