Position Summary

 

The Leighton Art Centre is seeking a practical, dependable and hands-on Facilities & Maintenance Coordinator to help care for our rural buildings, grounds and outdoor infrastructure.

 

Located on a large rural arts campus, the Leighton Art Centre requires ongoing attention to its buildings, public spaces, grounds, parking areas and visitor amenities. This position will provide dedicated responsibility for the day-to-day condition of the property and help the organization move from a primarily reactive approach to a more planned and preventative maintenance model.

 

The Facilities & Maintenance Coordinator will perform routine maintenance, minor repairs, grounds care, snow removal, washroom upkeep and property inspections while helping identify maintenance concerns before they become larger problems.

 

The position will also coordinate with qualified contractors when specialized electrical, plumbing, septic, mechanical, structural or other professional work is required.

 

This is initially a 12-month pilot position averaging approximately 20–25 hours per week , with flexibility in scheduling.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Building & Facility Maintenance

 

• Conduct regular inspections of buildings, public areas and facilities.
• Complete minor repairs and general maintenance as appropriate.
• Change light bulbs and perform minor hardware repairs.
• Maintain doors, locks, hinges and other basic building components.
• Complete minor painting and touch-ups.
• Identify leaks, deterioration, damage or maintenance concerns requiring attention.
• Perform minor non-specialized plumbing and maintenance tasks where appropriate.
• Assist with seasonal opening and closing of facilities.
• Maintain exterior visitor areas, outdoor furniture and structures.
• Assist with pest control management when necessary.

 

Washrooms & Visitor Areas

 

• Conduct regular washroom checks during operating hours.
• Complete light cleaning between professional cleaning visits as required.
• Restock toilet paper, paper towels, soap and other supplies.
• Remove garbage and assist with minor housekeeping.
• Help ensure visitor areas remain clean, safe and welcoming.

 

Grounds & Property Maintenance

 

• Lawn mowing and trimming.
• Weed control.
• Grass repair and seeding.
• Basic pruning and vegetation management.
• Flowerbed and landscaped area maintenance.
• General property cleanup and garbage collection.
• Fence and gate repairs.
• Monitor pathways, parking areas and potholes.
• Maintain outdoor furniture, signage and structures.
• Help keep public areas presentable and safe.

 

Winter Operations

 

• Snow shovelling and snow blowing/plowing where appropriate.
• Apply ice melt, sand and other traction materials.
• Monitor entrances, walkways and public areas for winter hazards.
• Help ensure safe access before staff, school groups and visitors arrive.
• Coordinate external snow-removal contractors when conditions exceed internal capacity.

 

Preventative Maintenance

 

Develop and maintain a simple preventative maintenance and property inspection schedule covering areas such as:

 

• Buildings and roofs
• Doors and windows
• Drainage and exterior surfaces
• Water systems and pumps
• Washrooms
• Lighting
• Fire and safety equipment
• Vehicles and equipment
• Lawn and snow equipment
• Security systems
• Septic and cistern systems
• Seasonal opening and closing requirements
•  

Maintain a basic maintenance log documenting inspections, completed work, outstanding issues and items requiring future attention.

 

Contractor Coordination

 

• Identify work requiring specialized professional assistance.
• Assist with obtaining information or quotes where required.
• Coordinate site access for contractors.
• Help oversee routine contractor visits and maintenance work.
• Communicate outstanding maintenance concerns to management.

 

The Leighton Art Centre will continue to engage qualified professionals for major or specialized work including electrical, septic, major plumbing, HVAC/mechanical systems, structural work, heritage conservation, major equipment repair, specialized safety inspections and other regulated trades.

 

Volunteer Coordination

 

• Assist with organizing maintenance and grounds volunteer activities.
• Prepare tools, equipment and materials for volunteer projects.
• Provide direction for appropriate maintenance activities.
• Help ensure volunteer projects are completed safely and consistently.

 

Transportation Requirement

Due to the Leighton Art Centre’s rural location , public transportation is not available. The successful candidate must have access to a reliable vehicle and be able to travel to and from the Centre independently in varying seasonal and weather conditions.

A valid driver’s licence is required.

Criminal Record Check

As the Leighton Art Centre regularly welcomes children, school groups and youth programs to the property, the successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check where applicable, as a condition of employment.

Qualifications & Experience

 

The successful candidate will ideally have:

 

• Practical experience in general property, building, grounds or facilities maintenance.
• A broad range of hands-on repair and maintenance skills.
• Experience safely operating common lawn, snow and maintenance equipment.
• Good judgment regarding what work can be completed internally and when a qualified contractor is required.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize competing maintenance needs.
• A proactive approach to identifying and addressing maintenance concerns.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and contractors.
• Reliability and a willingness to respond to changing property and seasonal needs.

 

Physical & Working Environment

 

This is a hands-on position on a rural property and will involve a combination of indoor and outdoor work.

 

The position requires an individual who is comfortable:

 

• Working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Walking throughout a large (80 acres) rural property.
• Performing physically active maintenance and grounds work.
• Using common maintenance, lawn and snow-removal equipment.
• Completing routine lifting, carrying, bending and other physical tasks associated with property maintenance.

 

Hours of Work

 

Approximately 20–25 hours per week , with flexibility according to seasonal and operational requirements.

 

Hours may vary throughout the year, with greater emphasis on grounds maintenance during spring and summer and snow and ice management during winter.

 

Some early-morning, evening or weekend work are required depending on weather, events or facility needs.

 

Compensation

 

This position is being introduced as a 12-month pilot , after which the Leighton Art Centre will evaluate the role based on operational needs, maintenance outcomes, contractor costs and organizational capacity.
