Position Overview

Reporting to the Principal of Junior School, the Vice Principal of Junior School assists the Principal with oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Little School and Junior School (Grades JK to 7). The Assistant Principal of Junior School will support faculty with curriculum, instructional and assessment practices aligned with the school's strategic priorities. This individual provides leadership and management of students and faculty in alignment with the vision, mission and values of York House School.

Responsibilities

Leadership

• Support the implementation of strategic priorities.
• Work collaboratively with all stakeholders to foster a strong, supportive and connected school.
• Support the vision, mission and values of the school.
• Ensure the development of the whole child through school programs and activities: academic, co-curricular, student life, service learning, leadership development, and student learning support (academic and social/emotional development).

Administrative and Operational

• With oversight of the Principal,ensure smooth operations of the Little School, including budget management, staff scheduling, emergency procedures, etc.
• Cultivate strong student, teacher and family relationships.
• Ensure compliance with requirements set by the Ministry of Education.
• Together with the Director of Human Resources, recruit and onboard On Call Teachers.
• Assist with recruitment of staff and faculty with Principal of Junior School and Director of Human Resources
• Ensure students and staff adhere to school policies, procedures and expectations.
• Ensure regular and effective communication with the school community.
• Coordinate and support co-curricular programs, assemblies and special events.
• Support student well-being and discipline in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the school and ensure adherence to Safe and Caring School and risk management guidelines.
• Serve as the first administrative contact for students, teachers, family to address social, emotional, and academic concerns
• Participate in the admissions process for the Little and Junior Schools.
• Assist with the annual review of policies and procedures for alignment to school mission and strategic priorities. Ensure all School handbooks and Little and Junior School policies are reviewed and updated regularly.
• Facilitate risk assessments for Little and Junior School excursions in accordance with risk management guidelines
• Oversee and coordinate supervision of students
• Oversee the Shuttle Bus service
• Oversee development of supervision schedules and assist in the development of student and staff timetables
• Review with Teachers and approves all Guest Visitor/Speaker applications
• Attend all school functions and events as required
• Other duties as required.

Educational program

• Support the understanding, development & implementation of Reggio Emilia approach in the Little School and Junior School
• Assist in the supervision of the JK -7 teacher co-planning of curriculum, pedagogy, assessment
• Implement, monitor, and report on data regarding student performance of literacy and numeracy, FSA and MDI to inform school improvement and other KPIs as required
• , Co-plan staff meetings
• Support the development of scope & sequence regarding student opportunities for inquiry and project-based learning
• Co-lead Little/Junior School Staff Meetings with Principal
• Contribute to Parent Education Series
• Coordinate New Teacher Orientation & Meetings with the Assistant Principal of Senior School
• Participate in school based team meetings as required

Other Duties & Specific Tasks

• Contribute to smooth operations in the Little School including but not limited to; opening and closing procedures; report cards, parent-teacher interviews, and After School Care program
• Chaperone school events, as required.
• Responsible oversight of the After School Care program in Junior School.
• May be required to teach at the Little or Junior School as directed by the Head of School
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualities

• Possesses a demonstrated passion for teaching and learning excellence.
• Demonstrated understanding of leading in a girls' school and knowledge and experience with how girls learn best.
• A commitment to excellence and well-being and holding students, teachers and families to realistic expectations.
• Excellent knowledge of the BC Curriculum or equivalent and latest trends in education.
• Demonstrated understanding of and experience in Reggio Emilia approach to learning an asset.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and work collaboratively with all stakeholders (principal, students, families, staff, faculty, alum).
• Demonstrated leadership skills and experience at the primary, junior and intermediate levels.
• Evidence of strong interpersonal and team-building skills.
• Ability to initiate new ideas and contribute to the strategic development of the school.
• Strong instructional leader with knowledge and experience of inquiry in all its forms.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the development of literacy and numeracy at the elementary level.
• Demonstrated experience and understanding of students' social and emotional development and well-being.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in all its dimensions.
• A proven track record of sustained commitment to professional growth and improvement.
• Diplomatic, empathetic, tactful, courteous and calm when dealing with challenges.
• Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality essential
• A sense of curiosity and humour.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Education.
• Principal Qualifications or equivalent an asset
• A Master's in Education is an asset.
• Demonstrated track record of inspiring and innovative leadership.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in a leadership role in an educational school setting.
• Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience.
• Proficiency in using and integrating technology to enhance learning.
• Certification from the BC Ministry of Education or equivalent.
