Job Summary The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a partnership between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017. Currently, the School has 36 core and joint faculty located on campus and at healthcare research institutes, Over 400 undergraduate and undergraduate students, more than 20 administrative staff, and several research core service facilities. The School serves as a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation, aspiring to be a global leader in the field. Its vision is to transform health care outcomes through the unconstrained exploration of the best possible integrative solutions across engineering, medicine, and biology. The Junior Research Engineer position aims to develop and facilitate the research being conducted at the Orthopaedic Injury & Biomechanics Laboratory. Specifically, the engineer in this position will conduct research and development on the Toyota-funded Pregnant Occupant projects. The engineer will also provide some supervision to undergraduate and graduate students who are conducting research related to these projects. The overall goal of the junior research engineer is to move the research and development components of the Pregnant Occupant Projects forward. Additionally, the Junior Research Engineer will work with Scientific Engineer and M.A.Sc. candidate on our related project that involves scanning a limited number of pregnant women in the open MRI scanner. In this project the junior engineer will assist with image analysis and MRI sequence selection based on the image analysis as well as optimizing the in-vehicle measurement procedures of the MRI project. The research engineer will work largely independently within task objectives though under the periodic and as-needed supervision of OIBG co-director Cripton and Scientific Engineer to prepare reports and peer-reviewed publications, present research results at scientific conferences, to groups of potential investors, journalists and to senior government officials and other stakeholders. This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, these positions requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate. Organizational Status The Junior Research Engineer will report to the co-Director of Orthopedic Injury Biomechanics Laboratory/Group (OIBG) - Dr. Cripton. Works in the OIBG research laboratories with other research engineers and technical staff and research trainees. Supervises undergraduate students, is a member of the team conducting measurements of pregnant automobile occupants. May give work assignments to technical staff at lower classification, such as MRI technicians. Consults with other departments (including SBME, Mechanical Engineering, ECE etc. at UBC) and universities (UVic/Simon Fraser/Waterloo/ETH/U of Calgary/U of Virginia) Work Performed Designing and construction of the exemplar car seat. Commissioning and measuring pregnant subjects with the Shining3D - EinScan H2 - Hybrid LED and Infrared VCSEL Light 3D Scanner. Analyzing and interpreting the images and data from the scanner. Developing summary statistics of the anthropometric data and MRI data collected in the pregnancy studies. Researching and determining the alternative methods for the MRI and LED/infrared scanner devices. This will be done largely independently, though under the supervision of the Scientific Engineer or Dr. Cripton. Collating and analyzing past MRI and external scan data and developing appropriate digital and hard copy storage systems to allow data to be compiled, and analyzed en masse. Detailing designs and specifications for experimental equipment components, modification, maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment, providing technical assistance and advice to undergraduate students. Participating in experimental design process and in project meetings is required. Assisting the Scientific Engineer and/or Dr. Cripton in writing the ethics protocol, scientific peer-reviewed papers and industrial reports. Assisting the Scientific Engineer and/or Dr. Cripton in preparing and presenting research results at scientific conferences, to journalists, to groups of investors and to government officials and other stakeholders Consequence of Error/Judgement The work of the Junior Research Engineer will be evaluated periodically by the co-Director. If errors are detected, the engineer will be notified and requested to correct the problem. The impact of errors would be to cause delays in certain research projects. For the most part, errors made in research labs are reversible. The repetition of incorrect work can, however, create significant cost of time and money. Supervision Received The Research Engineer will be supervised by co-Director Cripton and Scientific Engineer. Regularly scheduled meetings will provide the basis for the monitoring of the work. In most cases, more frequent interaction will result due to specific project requirements and normal daily meetings. It is important that the Junior Research Engineer be capable of working independently within task objectives, and particularly when the co-director is absent from the Laboratory. Supervision Given The Junior Research Engineer will assist the co-director to supervise undergraduate students in the lab. For the most part, the official academic supervisor of engineering undergraduate students will be one of the OIBG Directors or another member of the Engineering or Orthopedic faculty. However, the Junior Research Engineer will occasionally be the unofficial supervisor of the undergraduate students' research work due to a continuous presence and experience in the lab. The extent of the supervisory responsibility would be to assist the official supervisor in guiding the undergraduate student through the research study. This could take the form of assistance with protocol development, apparatus issues, testing assistance, data analysis questions, or writing guidance. Minimum Qualifications Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications Undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering (Biomechanics and Biomaterials stream) or related applied science preferred Background in experimental biomechanics, injury biomechanics and prototyping preferred, History of experimental apparatus design and fabrication preferred Documented history of involvement in the research process, Ability to validate data. Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate research manuscripts and technical reports and proposals. Ability to develop research methodologies and techniques. Experience with Canadian and/or international standards is a desired skill set for this position
