Senior Operations Manager – Chemistry (Mississauga, Ontario)

Responsibilities

• Manage the chemistry department and provide leadership to operation managers and departmental supervisors, ensuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures in the testing of client samples.
• Develop and maintain systems that ensure proper methodologies are used in accordance with client requirements.
• Administer corporate human resource programs, including recruitment, retention, compensation, training, equal employment opportunity, performance appraisal, and employment record documentation.
• Analyze and interpret data, guiding the correction of discrepancies before results are released or issued to client service personnel and/or clients.
• Ensure data is established in compliance with proper methods and that corrective actions are appropriately documented and followed up per SOP.
• Support company initiatives related to laboratory systems and collaborate with other department leaders to implement methods, ensuring training is effectively delivered.
• Communicate emerging client requirements to departmental personnel as needed.
• Work directly with internal and external auditors to provide information that ensures quality systems are utilized in testing procedures.
• Maintain expertise in food science and related technologies and keep up-to-date with the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and other required systems.
• Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes.
• Drive industrial performance initiatives as directed.
• Identify and develop emerging talent within the managed location.
• Perform final authorization release of lab data.
• Review and evaluate KRS data for proficiency testing programs, OPI data, and OT metrics related to key performance indicators.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
• Thorough knowledge of microbiology, chemistry, food science, or related fields required to supervise departmental personnel and interpret results.
• Broad knowledge of food science to obtain accurate analysis results.
• General knowledge of LIMS to review analysis results and correct discrepancies.
• Client‑relations skills to answer client questions and advise of processes.
• Proficiency in SOPs, gained as a microbiologist, chemist, or food scientist, with supervisory experience.
• Budgeting skills to determine laboratory budgets and ensure financial efficiency.
• Organizational and planning skills for smooth operations and work‑assignment scheduling.
• Supervisory skills to ensure proper and efficient daily operation of assigned tasks.

Required Skills

• Ensure analyses are performed within specified time limits and results are accurate.
• Use technical expertise to troubleshoot laboratory problems, including those from client requests for alternative procedures.
• Utilize reference journals and professional contacts to locate methodology for requested tests.
• Resolve analysis problems promptly to improve client relations.
• Verify that procedures are correctly performed, research new procedures, and make independent judgments about future laboratory actions.
• Determine laboratory personnel schedules and prioritize current analyses based on requests.
• Plan tasks for the department to improve operational efficiency and quality.
• Discuss changes in decisions with laboratory management before implementation.
