Teacher. K-12, Witat Ft. Babine Community School
The Witat Ft. Babine Community School Teacher, K-12, is the educational leader in the generalist classroom and will ensure that behavioural expectations and high levels of instruction ensure positive student participation and success each day. Implementation of existing programs and best practices, including Readwell, Saxon Math, Friends for Life (Fun Friends), Circle of Courage, First Days of School, DIBELS assessment (reading and math), Parallels Universe and other core school programs and strategies, will guarantee student achievement and community engagement. The Teacher is responsible for the instruction, supervision, assessment and evaluation of all students within the teaching assignment, and school overall, as part of a small instructional team. The Teacher works collaboratively with other educational professionals, with parents and families, with community members and with students to develop and maintain a school climate that is organized, orderly, positive, engaging, and reflects high expectations. The successful candidate will be committed to working in a traditional, semi-isolated First Nations Nedut’en community. Teacher residence and other benefits provided.
Basic Qualifications:
• commitment to active participation in the school and Nations professional learning community to ensure student success.
• committed to making collaborative decisions about instructional design and selection of instructional materials based on data related to student learning including teaching Readwell, Saxon Math and other foundation programs with fidelity, K-12.
• demonstrated experience and training in differentiated learning, intensive behavioural management and special learning needs.
• demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in the planning and delivery of the school's goals
• recent and successful classroom experiences in primary classrooms with multi-grade and inter-class organization
• demonstrated effective classroom management skills for maintaining a positive classroom environment (First Days of School)
• proven interpersonal skills and a high degree of professional flexibility, patience and humor
• must be highly motivated and able to work with children in a supportive and consistent manner
• knowledge and understanding of First Nations culture and issues in isolated communities in BC and of Nedut’en Carrier
• willingness to integrate appropriate technologies into your instructional practices in order to improve learning outcomes is essential
• knowledge of and experience with Readwell, Saxon Math, Friends for Life, Circle of Courage, First Days of School and DIBELS. and other research based programs and assessment
• must have or be eligible for BC Teacher Certification
• minimum B.Ed., TQS Category 5 or equivalent

Standard School Year: September to June
Probationary Period: 3 months
Wage Range: SD91 Salary Grid (Certification, Experience)
Job duties include but are not limited to:
Consistently complete comprehensive and detailed planning of all curriculum, including daily lessons, dayplan, overviews, units and assessment strategies
Complete detailed data/observation driven assessment for 3 oral and 3 written reports
Instructs and supports instruction of identified students, using proven teaching methods
Takes the lead on I.E.P. development, collaboration and implementation.
Schedules and coordinates relevant support staff effectively.
Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines and related resources to support classroom inclusive, pullout and traditional methods of instruction and Response to Intervention
Administers tests to evaluate students’ progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress.
Maintains discipline in instructional setting by applying disciplinary measures when necessary (ideally based in FN Principles of Learning, i.e. Circle of Courage). .
Meets with students, parents and SE team to discuss student progress and goals.
Participates in other staff and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
Performs related duties, for example sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counselling student in adjustment and academic problems.
Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment
Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations
Participate in extracurricular activities such as DPR, P.E., social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations
Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
Perform certain support duties including but not limited to student support, counselling students with academic problems and providing student encouragement and guidance.
Participate in Nation, department and school meetings, parent meetings and PLC meetings
Deals tactfully and respectfully with staff, students, parents and the public, with the BCTF code of conduct as a benchmark.
Works closely with a wide range of agencies and programs to build support for each student
will lead and complete a successful FNSA based school assessment
will provide appropriate course content and instruction for secondary students, including access to and participation on Connected Classrooms distance courses
Requirements:
University or College degree in a related are of instruction and specialization
Bachelors of Education degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent
University degree in an appropriate field preferred (Special Education an asset).
Proficiency in one of Canada’s official languages – English
4 or more years of teaching experience in a primary setting
Some Administrative experience an asset
First Aid certification preferred
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
High level of energy, physical fitness and personal health
High levels of patience and good sense of humor
Genuinely committed to helping children learn
Cultural sensitivity, with experience in First Nations schools and communities
Excellent problem solving skills, negotiation and mediation skills
Ability and willingness to perform required physical tasks
Ability to recognize individual learning styles and the characteristics of learners
High level of attention to confidentiality
Strong working knowledge of instructional and classroom technology (iPads/Laptops)
- Knowledge of Carrier Culture and Language an asset.
