Controller

One of our clients, a well-respected local law firm committed to delivering exceptional legal services, is seeking a full-time Controller to join their team. Position Overview: The Controller will manage all financial aspects of the firm, ensuring accurate reporting, compliance, and overall financial health. This role demands strong leadership and analytical skills, along with a comprehensive understanding of accounting principles. The accounting department has a full time AP and part time accounting assistant to support the new Controller.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
• Prepare and present financial reports and monthly operating results to the owners, including variance analysis.
• Manage all general accounting functions, including chart of accounts, general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets, petty cash, and bank reconciliations.
• Analyze monthly spending and billing reports for all staff.
• Prepare and file quarterly GST returns.
• Process semi-monthly payroll while ensuring compliance with monthly remittance requirements.
• Prepare and file the annual T4 summary and information slips with the Canada Revenue Agency.
• Prepare and submit the annual trust report to ensure compliance with the Law Society of Alberta.
• Develop and monitor the annual budget.
• Maintain and enhance accounting practices, processes, systems, and internal controls to ensure compliance with reporting standards.
• Coordinate the preparation of additional financial reports and conduct special analyses as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting;
• CPA designation;
• 2+ years of relevant experience as a Controller, preferably at a Law firm.
• 5+ years of bookkeeping experience.
• Strong financial analysis skills.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with Soluno software is an asset.
• Outstanding critical thinking skills.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
