Job Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Lands, the Environmental Compliance Coordinator is responsible for coordinating environmental compliance, waste and recycling programming, invasive species programming, land remediation, environmental review, climate action coordination, and environmental monitoring related to land use and development on Haisla Nation reserve lands. The position ensures that development activity, land use, waste management, recycling initiatives, invasive species management, climate action projects, contractor activities, and environmental requirements are coordinated, documented, and tracked to protect Haisla lands, infrastructure, community health, and environmental values.

The Environmental Compliance Coordinator is responsible for the leadership, management, and supervision of the Invasive Species Lead and the Recycling and Climate Action Coordinator. The role works closely with the Planning & Development Coordinator and other departments to ensure environmental requirements are incorporated into development approvals, land use permits, monitoring processes, remediation projects, and compliance activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Environmental Compliance Coordination

• Review development proposals, land use activities, and site works for potential environmental concerns.


• Identify environmental requirements, risks, permits, studies, mitigation measures, and monitoring needs.


• Coordinate environmental conditions for development approvals and land use permits.


• Track compliance with environmental conditions, remediation plans, contractor obligations, and applicable Haisla policies.


• Conduct or coordinate site visits and field follow-up activities.


• Document compliance issues, corrective actions, and follow-up requirements.


• Escalate non-compliance or environmental risks to the Manager, Lands.

Waste, Recycling, and Climate Action Program Oversight

• Provide day-to-day oversight and support to the Recycling and Climate Action Coordinator.


• Coordinate waste and recycling program operations, planning, scheduling, and service delivery.


• Support climate action initiatives focused on sustainability, emissions reduction, and community education.


• Coordinate with contractors, service providers, internal departments, and community-facing staff.


• Track operational issues, service concerns, participation rates, and program performance.


• Maintain program records, contractor correspondence, invoices, and reporting documentation.


• Identify operational or environmental risks and recommend improvements.

Invasive Species Program Oversight

• Provide day-to-day oversight and support to the Invasive Species Lead.


• Coordinate invasive species planning, seasonal workplans, treatment priorities, mapping, and reporting.


• Ensure invasive species activities align with Lands Department priorities and environmental objectives.


• Track treatment locations, monitoring results, follow-up requirements, and program outcomes.


• Coordinate equipment, supplies, safety requirements, and contractor support.


• Maintain records, maps, reports, treatment documentation, and compliance information.


• Support education and communication initiatives related to invasive species management.  

Land Remediation and Environmental Site Coordination

• Coordinate environmental site assessments, remediation planning, contaminated site reviews, and restoration requirements.


• Track consultant reports, contractor workplans, recommendations, timelines, and completion requirements.


• Coordinate with consultants, contractors, regulators, and internal departments.


• Ensure remediation requirements are incorporated into development reviews and project planning.


• Maintain environmental reports, testing results, remediation plans, and completion records.


• Identify environmental liability risks and escalate serious concerns as required.

Environmental Review of Development Applications

• Review development applications for environmental concerns in collaboration with the Planning & Development Coordinator.


• Identify requirements for environmental studies, assessments, remediation plans, drainage reviews, and monitoring conditions.


• Provide environmental comments and recommendations for permits and approvals.


• Track environmental requirements throughout the development lifecycle.


• Support development of environmental review checklists and standard permit conditions.

Staff Supervision and Program Coordination

• Supervise assigned environmental program staff.


• Coordinate workplans, schedules, reporting requirements, and program priorities.


• Support staff training, onboarding, safety planning, and performance documentation.


• Review reports, inspection records, field notes, and tracking documents.


• Ensure work is conducted safely and aligned with departmental priorities.


• Escalate human resources, safety, or operational concerns when necessary.

Environmental Inspections, Monitoring, and Documentation

• Conduct or coordinate environmental inspections and site monitoring activities.


• Prepare inspection notes, reports, photographs, and follow-up recommendations.


• Track corrective actions and verify completion.


• Maintain monitoring and compliance records for active files.


• Develop and maintain environmental tracking tools, forms, and reporting templates.


• Support evidence-based decision-making through accurate documentation.

Interdepartmental and External Coordination

• Coordinate environmental matters with internal departments and external stakeholders.


• Communicate with contractors, consultants, service providers, and agencies as authorized.


• Support environmental planning and review processes.


• Ensure environmental concerns are identified early in development and land use discussions.


• Prepare briefing notes, reports, correspondence, and recommendations for management review.

Reporting and Records Management

• Provide regular program updates and environmental compliance reports.


• Maintain organized records of reports, correspondence, inspections, maps, photographs, and documentation.


• Track budgets, invoices, timelines, workplans, and deliverables.


• Support preparation of reports for management, Council, funders, and external agencies.


• Ensure records are maintained according to departmental standards and confidentiality requirements.

Skills & Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Management, Natural Resources, Land Management, Environmental Planning, Biology, Geography, Indigenous Environmental Governance, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


• 3-5 years of experience in environmental coordination, compliance monitoring, waste management, invasive species management, remediation coordination, land development review, or a related field.


• Experience supervising staff or coordinating field programs is preferred.


• Experience working with a First Nation government, reserve lands, Land Code administration, community infrastructure, or Indigenous environmental stewardship is considered an asset.


• Knowledge of environmental site assessments, remediation processes, waste and recycling systems, invasive species management, and environmental monitoring.


• Strong understanding of environmental compliance, monitoring, documentation, and issue tracking.


• Ability to coordinate multiple programs, contractors, staff, deadlines, and field activities.


• Strong written and verbal communication skills.


• Strong organizational and records management skills.


• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel tracking systems, records management systems, GIS/mapping tools, and field documentation tools.


• Understanding of Haisla Nation governance, territory, community priorities, and environmental stewardship values is considered a strong asset.


• Satisfactory completion of a criminal record check.

Salary Range: $30.35/hr - $35.71/hr
