Provincial Program Trainer - Youth Mental Health

Association for New Canadians is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to
the provision of settlement and integration services for immigrants and refugees.  

Job Title: Provincial Program Trainer – Youth Mental Health 

Location: St. John’s, NL  

Position Type: 1 full-time position until March 31, 2027 , with possibility of extension pending budget availability and satisfactory performance

Reporting to the   Project Manager-Youth Mental Health, the  Program Trainer  is responsible for coordinating and delivering peer support training, monitoring program delivery, and ensuring cultural relevance for an innovative new youth mental health program at ANC. Focused on newcomer youth ages 16-25, this program is designed to be culturally-competent and trauma-informed; engage youth in peer-led initiatives to reduce stigma, build trust, and foster connections; increase mental health literacy and  awarenes s ; and contribute to the development of a coordinated network of comprehensive support.  

Roles and Responsibilities:  

Training and Supervision of Peer Support Workers:  

• Work with the Project Manager to develop  culturally-competent , trauma-informed curriculum to train newcomer youth as Peer Support Workers,  leveraging existing community resources where possible  

• Lead the recruitment, annual hiring, and retention of 10 Peer Support Workers  

• Lead the training of Peer Support Workers, ensuring they are certified in ASIST, MHFA and other trainings recommended and offered by CMHA,  Lifewise , and other collaborating partners  

• Work with the Project Manager to set work schedules for the Peer Support Workers and to promote the Peer Support Workers’ office hours/availability within the broader community  

• Fulfill all supervisorial responsibilities for the 10 Peer Support Workers, with support from the Project Manager as needed  

• Support Peer Support Workers with their own mental health needs (directly and by referring to the project’s clinical counsellor as needed) 

• Establish pathways for the Peer Support Workers to explore careers in mental health-related fields  

Development and Delivery of Mental Health Literacy Sessions:  

• Work with the Project Manager to develop  culturally-relevant and responsive mental health information sessions for youth, their families, ANC staff, and community partners alike. Ensure that these sessions meet client needs, with potential for in-person workshop style, online, other  

• Support the delivery of these sessions by the Peer Support Workers and/or (depending on audience and Peer Support Workers’ comfort level) deliver these sessions with support from other project staff  

• Arrange for interpretation, transportation, and other supports as needed, to reduce barriers to engagement in the sessions  

• Seek to collaborate with community partners,  so as to help grow a network of mental health support for newcomers  

• Administer surveys and other tools to  determine literacy sessions’ impact and to promote continuous improvement  

Administrative and other:  

• Assist with collecting and entering project data into databases and spreadsheets as assigned and according to funding guidelines and internal requests  

• Identify and  leverage promising practices and progressive tools from a wide range of sources and partners to enhance program quality  

• Remain current within the newcomer youth mental health sector drawing on provincial/regional/national networks and key resources  

• Develop a strong referral network within ANC and across the province to ensure youth  are connected with available mental health supports  

• Other duties as assigned  

Qualifications and Experience:  

• Bachelor’s degree in education, educational development, social work, counselling, or related field is  ;  Master’s degree or above preferred  

• Cultural awareness and sensitivity in working with a diverse client group; experience in working with refugees and immigrants is an asset ( i.e. knowledge of pre-migration trauma and other settlement-related stressors)  

• Extensive experience working with youth ages 16 – 25, recognizing their distinctive developmental needs  

• An ability to lead and coach youthful staff in a service delivery environment  

• Self-directed and self-motivated, with an ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment  

• Able to work collaboratively with a team and community partners  

• Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills (oral and written)  

• Excellent knowledge of MS365  

• Ability to speak  additional languages is a strength  

Conditions of Employment:  

• Legal authorization to work in Canada  

• Flexible to work outside of core hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm) 

• Valid class 5 NL driver’s license and daily access to a  personal  vehicle  is  

• Ability to travel  is   

• Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary  

• Valid First Aid Certificate is an asset
