Summary
The dispatcher serves as the first point of contact for incoming calls for service. Following guidelines for various types of responses, the dispatcher determines the appropriate response, resolves issues as able, and dispatches patrol officers as required.
Primary Purpose
Key responsibilities include monitoring field units to support the safety and availability of officers in the field, generating incident reports, and responding to emergency requests. Additionally, this position handles intrusion alarms, performs clerical duties, and implements lost and found procedures.
Nature of Work
Reporting to the Staff Sergeant, you will demonstrate a high level of good judgement and the ability to think quickly to apply departmental policies and procedures. Due to the nature of the work, discretion is critical. The ability to multitask and remain calm in stressful situations will be expected.
This position will operate in a diverse, complex, and often highly active office environment with multiple, and competing demands. Continuous change, shifting priorities, and frequent interruptions are the norm.
Prompt, complete, and accurate work is extremely important to mitigate risks associated with supporting Officers and the community.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities
- Monitors major incidents and creates a record for presentation at debriefing.
- Monitors field units for well-being and checks in on officers regarding safety and availability, revising and updated statuses as appropriate.
- Generates calls for service, initiates, and completes incident reports as applicable.
- Receives and immediately dispatches field units to intrusion alarms.
- Monitors intrusion alarm systems, contacts technicians, and troubleshoots to keep all systems operational.
- Provides reception and client service support to other departments as required.
- Responds to multiple telephone calls, computer systems, and radio equipment simultaneously.
- Determines the type of service required and location of incident, and ensures emergency requests receive immediate action.
- Provides appropriate information for public disclosure or refers callers to appropriate department or agency.
- Disseminates pertinent information to field personnel.
- Reviews unit policies and procedures, emergency management plans, and dispatcher responsibilities for major emergencies on a regular basis.
- Performs Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC), Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), and record management system queries and relays information as required.
- Responds to and completes warrant callback requests from the provincial courthouse.
- Performs occasional administrative duties including but not limited to drafting correspondence, mail sorting, and file creation.
- Sends and removes alerts and messages in alignment with USAFE and emergency communications protocols.
- Implements procedures for collection, storage, and disposal of all lost and found items.
- Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
- Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Education
- Grade 12 diploma.
- A post-secondary diploma or certificate in a related field is preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of one year administrative experience.
- Previous dispatch or field experience in law enforcement, security, or policing is preferred.

- Demonstrated ability to deliver prompt, complete, and accurate work.
- Excellent critical thinking, sound judgement, discretion, and timely decision-making skills.
- High degree of professionalism and integrity.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and multi-task efficiently and effectively.
- Ability to remain professional, composed, and organized under pressure or in high-stress situations.
- Knowledge of university buildings, locations, and street names is preferred.

- Strong computer and typing skills and proficiency with technology.
